NATIONWIDE SOUTH WEEKEND ROUND-UP

Hornchurch recorded the most impressive result of the weekend as they emphatically inflicted the second defeat of the season on Nationwide South leaders Basingstoke. The Urchins won 6-0, scoring five times in the last half-hour, as they convincingly beat the early-season form side.

Basingstoke's heavy loss allowed Grays Athletic to move above them on goal difference following a 1-1 draw with Eastbourne, while Cambridge City moved level on 15 points following their 2-0 win at Havant & Waterlooville.

Lewes remain in touch with the top six after a 3-1 triumph over Weston-Super-Mare - the goals coming from Dwain Clarke, direct from a corner, Barrington Belgrave and Luke Cornwall. Clarke is now heading off for a trial at Football League Championship side Sheffield United.

Bognor Regis remain ahead of Lewes, on goal difference, after their 1-0 defeat at Newport - a victory that pushed County into the top half of the table - while Maidenhead dropped a few places after losing by the same scoreline at home to Dorchester.

There were 3-1 home wins for Margate, against Hayes, and St Albans, against Carshalton Athletic, while Thurrock picked up their fourth away victory of the season as they beat Sutton United 2-1, and Redbridge had success on their travels again, this time at Welling.

After a disappointing start to the season, which brought the resignation of chairman Ian Ridley, Weymouth claimed their second win thanks to player-manager Steve Claridge, who hit a hat-trick to see off Bishop's Stortford in a tight game. The Terras won 3-2, moving them up to 16th, and their boss said in his Sunday column in The People newspaper: "I'm sad to see Ian go, but I don't know where the rumours that I am about to follow him out of the door are coming from. I will continue to be player-manager here. I've signed a four-year deal, I've got a job to do - and I intend to keep doing it."

For the love of the game...
