CONFERENCE: WEEKEND ROUND-UP
It was a great day for Barnet on Saturday: while they were busy putting five past The Daggers in front of the Sky Sports cameras, Aldershot were pegged back to a 2-2 draw at Scarborough in the live match on www.conferencefootball.tv (read more about these games here), and second-placed Carlisle were also held by Exeter.
The Cumbrians, the top scorers away from home in the Nationwide Conference, failed to register on their travels for the first time this season, as The Grecians ground out a point at St James' Park in their first game since Eamonn Dolan's departure.
Exeter's player-coach Scott Hiley is holding talks with the club with a view to succeeding Dolan in the manager's chair, despite initially ruling himself out of the running for the vacant post. He told the club's website: "I never really put myself in that mould because of my inexperience. But it keeps coming back at my doorstep and so it is all a bit confusing at the moment."
Meanwhile, Fourth-placed Gravesend & Northfleet were beaten 3-2 by Burton Albion, who survived some late pressure to cling on for their second home win of the campaign - their goals coming from Craig Dudley, Robert Talbot and Andy Ducros.
Hereford United therefore have an excellent opportunity to move back into the top three tonight when they travel to face Accrington Stanley in another live televised game on Sky Sports - kick-off at 7:45pm.
Crawley Town also failed to capitalise on their excellent start to their first season in the Nationwide Conference as they were held to a goalless draw at home to bottom club Northwich Victoria, who are now just three points shy of the zero mark, following their 10-point Sporting Sanctions penalty.
Morecambe maintained their recent good form with a 3-0 win over Tamworth - all the goals coming in the second half, through top scorer Michael Twiss, Kieron Walmsley and substitute Garry Thompson.
Woking enjoyed an important victory on Friday night as Ian Selley's late penalty saw off the challenge of the remaining 10 Shaymen on the field. Halifax started well and went ahead through Adam Quinn but Lewis Kileen saw red for two bookable offences near the end of the first half. Woking capitalized on the extra man advantage after the break as Stephen Evans pulled them level and Selley converted the crucial spot-kick after sub Amos Foyewa was brought down by Quinn.
Elsewhere, Canvey Island edged out Forest Green Rovers with a 2-1 win secured through Neil Gregory and Jon Keeling, while Farnborough and York picked up a point apiece with a 1-1 draw at Cherrywood Road - Andy Bishop's late goal canceling out Boro midfielder Gary Holloway's first goal of the season.
