NORTH: A Special Day and a Welcome Win for Barrow
Saturday saw Barrow snap a six-game Nationwide North losing streak with a 2-1 win over Kettering Town at Holker Street. The game saw long serving goalkeeper Simon Bishop return to action after two months out with a foot injury whilst debutant striker Glenn Murray, formerly of Workington scored the opening goal of the game on his debut. The winning goal came from local defender Guy Heffernan whose strike was his first senior goal in his 31st first team appearance.
Off the field, there were two special events bearing on the club's history. The first was a minute's silence held at kick off in memory of former Barrow manager Don McEvoy. Mr McEvoy had two spells in charge at Holker Street whilst the club was in the Football League. He was the only manager during the club's 51 years in the Football League to take them to promotion as they finished third in Division Four in the 1966-67 season. The silence was observed impeccably by both sets of fans.
The second event saw the launch of a new book celebrating the club's F.A. Trophy success of 1990. The book entitled - 'The Trophy, The Dream' is written by fan and prolific local author Darren Gardner. Proceeds from the book will go to assist the ground staff. At half time a copy of the book was presented to Jill Wilkie, the widow of the Barrow manager on the great day, the legendary Ray Wilkie. A number of members of the 1990 squad attended the game including former assistant manager Neil McDonald (now a Director), former coach Alan Cook and players Jimmy Capstick, Colin Cowperthwaite, Neil Doherty and Kevin Proctor.
