NORTH: ROUND-UP - ALTRINCHAM GET OFF TO A FLIER

Altrincham made a superb start as the new Nationwide North division got underway on Saturday, recording a 4-1 home win over Gainsborough Trinity to top the first ever Nationwide North table.

The Trafford side recovered from a 1-0 half-time deficit to record an impressive victory over their Lincolnshire visitors as two goals from Peter Wright, sandwiched between strikes from Colin Potts and Colin Little, brought them the three points.

Kettering also enjoyed a comfortable home win over Hucknall (3-1), while Alfreton beat Bradford ["don't-forget-the-brackets"] (Park Avenue) 2-1, and there were also 2-1 triumphs for Harrogate and Southport, who beat Harrow and Vauxhall Motors respectively.

The home supporters also went home happy in Lancaster and Nuneaton - both side achieving 1-0 wins - while the only away success of the day was Redditch United's single-goal victory at Runcorn.

Honours even elsewhere as Worcester and Hinckley, and Worksop and Stalybridge drew 1-1, while Droylsden and Moor Green shared four second-half goals at the Butcher's Arms Ground.

The early leaders Altrincham travel to Ashton United tonight hoping to stretch their advantage at the top of the table, while their hosts will be keen to record their first points in the Nationwide North division after losing their opening match at Nuneaton.

For the love of the game...
