SOUTH: WEEKEND ROUND-UP
Bognor shade 11-goal thriller
Bognor Regis Town and Welling United produced the game of the day in the Nationwide South as they shared 11 goals in an incredible match at Nyewood Lane.
Drawing 3-3 at half time, both teams went for victory and it was bottom club Welling who gained the upper hand as they took a shock 5-3 lead early in the second period. But The Rocks completed an amazing comeback as Luke Nightingale completed his hat-trick with the 69th-minute leveller and Ben Watson hit the winner nine minutes later.
Bognor's 6-5 victory ensured they remain in fourth place in the table.
Unbeaten start continues
Leaders Hornchurch and second-placed Grays Athletic both extended their unbeaten starts to the Nationwide South season with 2-0 away wins. The Urchins saw off Carshalton and Grays overcame Cambridge to remain within a point of the early leaders.
Meanwhile, former table-toppers Basingstoke are also one point behind Hornchurch following their comprehensive 3-0 defeat of Newport County.
One goal's good enough...
Indeed, one goal was all that was required for Weymouth and Lewes to earn themselves three points on their travels to Margate and Redbridge respectively. Darren Annon was the unfortunate scorer of the own goal that handed Steve Claridge's men victory at the Homelands Stadium, while a stunning first-half goal by Junior Kadi was enough to give the Rooks a hard fought victory at Redbridge.
Eastbourne also enjoyed a 1-0 win, at home to St Albans, thanks to Richard Harris's penalty towards the end of the first half.
Wins for Weston and Waterlooville
Havant & Waterlooville and Weston-Super-Mare both won on Saturday to climb up the table and keep themselves in touch with the chasing pack. Super-Mare saw off the challenge of Maidenhead (2-1) while Havant won 3-1 at Thurrock to keep themselves just a point behind the Somerset side.
Sutton rewarded for second-half fightback
The only draw of the day came at Dorchester where Sutton United recovered from 2-0 down to snatch a point. Spanish striker Juan Ugarte scored his first goal at The Avenue Stadium, four minutes after Matt Groves had put the home side in the lead, but he was dismissed after the break and the visitors struck back through Craig Watkins and Eddie Akuamoah.
