05 September 2009 18:11:00

Newport County top the Blue Square South table on Saturday as one of only three teams yet to taste defeat after eight games of the new season.

County travelled to Park View Road to take on Welling United and took a 20th minute lead through Craig Reid.

And they ensured the points returned with them back to the Principality when Reid made it 2-0 with a 67th minute penalty.

The two other unbeaten sides to date are Basingstone Town, who shared a goalles draw at the Dripping Pan with Lewes, and Thurrock, who won 2-0 at York Road against Maidenhead United.

David Bryant put the Essex men in front after 19 minutes and then the returning Leon McKenzie doubled the visitors` advantage with 6 minutes to go.

Dover Athletic are third, but they suffered their first defeat as a Blue Square South side, going down 2-1 at Westleigh Park to Havant & Waterlooville, whose Manny Williams – the league`s player of the month ffor August – started the new month off well with a brace – the first after just 4 minutes and the second from the spot 6 minutes before the break.

Adam Birchall replied for Dover on 66 minutes, but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Eastleigh and Staines Town shared a 0-0 Sparshatts Stadium stalemate, but Bromley really spoiled Steve Claridge`s Weymouth comeback at the Wessex Stadium.

Bromley became real party poopers by beating the Terras 5-1 – and that after David Obaze had given the home side an early 2nd minute lead.

Ryan Dolby equalised 9 minutes before the break and Gareth Williams gave the visitors the lead 4 minutes later.

Dolby scored his second and Bromley`s third 8 minutes after the break with Warren McBean adding a brace on 55 and 60 minutes.

Weymouth`s neighbours Dorchester Town fared only marginally better in losing 4-0, but at least they were away from home as Worcester City gained their first three-point haul of the campaign at St George`s Lane.

Alfie Carter gave the home side the boost of a 3rd minute lead and Matt Dinsmore, made available by manager Richard Dryden last week, was restored to the side and doubled City`s lead in the 4th minute.

Dinsmore scored again on 24 minutes and Rob Elvins added a third with still 6 minutes of the opening half remaining.

George Purcell bagged a brace in the 43rd and 80th minutes to help Braintree Town to a 2-1 win at Weston-super-Mare, whose Darren Mullings had given them a 35th minute lead.

Bath City went nap at Bishop`s Stortford, with Kaid Mohamed giving them a 9th minute lead that Darren Edwards (pictured) doubled on 23 minutes.

Charlie Sheringham pulled the home side back into the game 7 minutes before the break, but 11 minutes after it Edwards scored again to make it 3-1 and Lewis Hogg on 64 minutes and Mohamed again 9 minutes from the end made it nap for City.

Sam Sloma put Woking in front at the Beveree against Hampton & Richmond Borough after 25 minutes.

Delano Sam-Yorke doubled the Cards` lead they held on to after 56 minutes.

And Chelmsford City beat St Albans City by the same scoreline at Melbourne Park, with Antonio Murray giving the home side a 22nd minute lead and Rob Edmans doubling it with 4 minutes remaining.
