Saturday`s Blue Square Premier Review....
29 August 2009 19:38:00

Blue Square Premier leaders Oxford United maintained their excellent start to the new season with a 1-0 win at newly-promoted AFC Wimbledon on Saturday – although Chris Wilder`s side had to ride their luck.

The U`s triumphed at Kingsmeadow thanks to an own goal and a penalty save.

Oxford took the lead 5 minutes after half time when Jay Conroy redirected Damian Batt's cross into his own net.

The Dons had a chance to level after Batt brought down Paul Lorraine in the box but Danny Kedwell saw his penalty well saved by Ryan Clarke.

Mansfield Town are second after an early 2nd minute Rob Duffy goal eventually proved enough for victory at the Deva Stadium against a spirited Chester City outfit.

Duffy scored the only goal when he reacted to a flick-on from Craig Armstrong's free kick and beat City keeper Jon Danby with a deflected effort.

Lewis Alessandra hit the post for home side and Town keeper Alan Marriott made a fine save from Neil Ashton.

Jake Speight had a goal disallowed for the Stags and Louis Briscoe and Kyle Perry also went close in a fiery match that saw five bookings.

Kettering Town claimed a useful point as they and Luton Town drew a blank at the Elgood's Arena.
Luton had the first real chance when Andy Burgess volleyed just wide and Tom Craddock forced Lee Harper into a routine save.

But the Poppies went on to have the better chances in the opening half and only the brilliance of visiting goalkeeper Mark Tyler kept them out.

Former Rushden & Diamonds man Burgess was forced off through injury before half-time after a crunching tackle by former team-mate John Dempster.

Luton started the second half much better and they should have been in front 3 minutes after the restart when a mix-up between Ian Roper and Harper left Craddock with an open net but he missed his kick and shot wide.

Chances were few and far between after that as the clash descended into a bit of a midfield battle.

A brace by Richard Brodie helped York City to an emphatic win over the Histon at Glassworld Stadium.

Brodie gave the visitors the in the 11th minute with a close-range header.

The Stutes tried to play their way back into the game, but their hopes were dashed when they fell two goals behind in the 57th minute through Adam Smith.

Brodie then wrapped up the points for the Minstermen with a penalty 5 minutes later after he was brought down in the area by Craig Pope.

Danny Wright grabbed a consolation goal in stoppage time to give the home fans something to shout about.

Cambridge United put ten-man Gateshead to the sword with a 3-0 victory at Abbey Stadium.

A Chris Holroyd baagged a brace, giving the U's a 40th minute lead with a fine strike from just outside the area.

Andy Parkinson then gave his side a two-goal cushion in the 65th minute and things went from bad to worse for the visitors when Stephane Pelonde was given his marching orders for a foul on Danny Crow.

Holroyd then sealed a miserable afternoon for the Tynesiders when he scored from the spot after Alex Francis was adjudged to have handled.

Michael Corcoran was sent-off for a horror tackle as Rushden & Diamonds suffered their first defeat since the opening day of the season at Broadhall Way against Stevenage Borough.

The Irishman's challenge from behind on the halfway line left Boro midfielder Lawrie Wilson with a dislocated ankle.

Diamonds were already a goal down after just 6 minutes when Lee Boylan converted from the spot following Curtis Osano's trip on ex-Diamonds` forward Chris Beardsley.

On the stroke of half time Max Porter's foul on Boylan sparked a mass brawl and the referee blew up 2 minutes early after issuing two bookings.

Beardsley's close-range miss at the start of the second period looked costly when Diamonds drew level 4 minutes later.

Mark Byrne broke forward and Pattison clipped the ball past keeper Chris Day for Akurang to knock in the equaliser.

However, another former Diamonds` player, midfielder Michael Bostwick, restored Boro's lead with a drive into the far corner beyond England prospect Dale Roberts.

Wrexham secured their first away win for five months as Wes Baynes` brace earned the Welshmen a comfortable victory at the New Lawn against Forest Green Rovers.

Baynes hit a thunderous free kick past keeper Terry Burton to open the Dragons` account after 29 minutes and he then added a second 3 minutes later.

Jason Walker scored a late penalty as Barrow edged past Tamworth to record their second league win of the season.

Michael Briscoe was penalised for a deliberate handball and Walker coolly slotted home from the spot with 13 minutes remaining.

Tamworth failed to rally after the goal and also had Brad Pritchard sent-off for a professional foul in stoppage time.

Toby Little scored a last-minute winner as Hayes & Yeading United won 2-1 at Stonebridge Road against Ebbsfleet United for their first win since gaining promotion.

The substitute converted Marc Canham's cross in the 2nd minute of injury-time.

The visitors led after 3 minutes when on-loan George Daley volleyed home Scott Fitzgerald's cross.

Magno Vieira equalised just 3 minutes later but the visitors pushed for a winner and it eventually came through Little, who had only been on the field for 8 minutes.

Substitute Charlie Taylor scored his first goal for Grays Athletic 5 minutes from time to deny Crawley Town victory at the Broadfield Stadium.

Taylor headed home new boy Glenn Poole's cross to earn a share of the spoils after Jefferson Louis had notched his first goal for Crawley after just 6 minutes.

Darrell Clarke's header deep into stoppage time rescued a point for Salisbury City against Eastbourne Borough at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium.

Earlier, Simon Weatherstone had put the visitors ahead when he smashed home a 30-yard effort into the top corner in the 69th minute.
