Saturday`s Blue Square North Review....
29 August 2009 18:16:00

There are no unbeaten teams in Blue Square North after just six matches of the new season after Corby Town crashed to a spectacular first defeat as they were hammered 6-3 at home by fellow promotees Gloucester City on Saturday.

Lee Smith put Gloucester ahead after 7 minutes and things then got worse for the Steelmen as, from a quick break, Gloucester doubled their lead through Luke Ballinger after 16 minutes.

Gloucester then completed a fine first half performance when Tom Hamblin made it 3-0 6 minutes before the break.

Alex Sykes made it 4-0 on 54 minutes, but 3 minutes later, Gavin Strachan pulled one back for the Steelmen with a superb free kick.

But their joy lasted 60 seconds before Smith netted his second of the day and the Tigers' fifth.
To their credit, Corby pressed on and Leon Mettam pulled another back on 68 minutes.

Smith completed his hat trick 2 minutes from time before Brett Solkhon pulled another back for Corby a minute later.

There are now four joint leaders, with Droylsden, Southport and Eastwood Town all joining the Steelmen on thirteen points.

The Bloods beat Fleetwood Town 2-0 at the Butcher`s Arms with goals from Shaun Whalley after just 2 minutes and Andy Brown on 10 minutes, while `Port beat Harrogate Town 3-1 at Haig Avenue.

But Liam Watson`s side had to come back from being a 44th minute Rory Coleman goal down to win, courtesy of Rob Marsh-Evans 6 minutes after the interval, Steve Daly`s penalty on 70 minutes and Matty McGinn 9 minutes from time.

The Badgers, meanwhile, were grateful for a 79th minute Ian Holmes effort at Coronation Park against Hinckley United.

Both Farsley Celtic and Northwich Victoria have wiped out their minus-ten points and can now `start` their season!

Farsley moved onto nil points after beating Gainsborough Trinity 4-1 at Throstle Nest, showing new Trinity boss Brian Little he has plenty of work to do when he officially takes over shortly.

Gareth Grant gave Celtic the lead right on half time. Ricky Mallon equalised on 54 minutes, but a David Syers brace on 79 and 89 and a Dominic Kreif effort in injury-time made it a comfortable win for Celtic in the end.

Vics travelled up to Cumbria and returned down the M6 with all three points, with Simon Grand`s 66 minute effort proving enough to see off hosts Workington.

Newly-promoted Ilkeston Town will be pleased with their point from a goalless draw with AFC Telford United at the New Bucks Head, while Blyth Spartans will be delighted as their two new signings, Paul Brayson and Mark Doninger, were amongst the goals as they beat Hyde United 3-0 at Ewen Fields to inflict a first defeat on the Tigers.

Brayson broke the deadlock 7 minutes after half time and Doninger doubled that 12 minutes from time, with Ian Graham adding a third in stoppage time.

Redditch United also won by the same scoreline at their own Valley Stadium against Alfreton Town.

Scott Oliver gave the Reds a 32nd minute lead and a David Bridgwater spot-kick doubled that 7 minutes after the break, with Gary Hay making sure with a third 18 minutes from time.

Nick Wellecomme bagged a brace for Stafford Rangers at Rivacre Road against Vauxhall Motors, but it was only worth a point as the game ended 2-2.

Wellecomme gave Rangers a 17th minute lead that Robbie Booth cancelled out 4 minutes later. Karl Noon then put the home side in front right on half time only for Wellecomme to equalise within 6 minutes of the restart.

Stalybridge Celtic`s Matty Barlow had a similar experience at Damson Park against Solihull Moors.

Barlow had Celtic two-up with goals in the 15th and 53rd minutes before Tim Gould 2 minutes later and then Liam Daly 13 minutes from time, rescued a point for the hosts.
