Tuesday`s Blue Square Bet North Review....
25 August 2010 15:47:00

AFC Telford United, Alfreton Town and Workington are still at the top of the Blue Square Bet North pile after Tuesday night`s fixtures saw all three make it four wins out of four games played to date.

AFC Telford made it four from four with a 2-0 victory over Gloucester City at the New Bucks Head.

Midfielder Phil Trainer opened the scoring in the 34th minute and popped up again 20 minutes later to make sure of the result in front of a crowd of 1,906.

Alfreton came from behind to beat a resilient Gainsborough Trinity side at the Impact Arena.

After a first half full of aerial combat, Trinity took the lead on 47 minutes when Leon Mettam was allowed a free header at the back post.

As the Alfreton turned the screw former Red Mark Hume headed firmly past his own keeper to level the scores on 53 minutes.

Paul Clayton produced another top quality strike on 73 minutes with a ten yard angled volley into the roof of the net but the points were only ensured by two top drawer saves from home keeper Paddy Gamble.

Harrogate Town rued two defensive lapses which cost them a share points in a 2-1 defeat at Borough Park against Workington.

Jonny Wright gave the Reds an 18th minute lead after Harrogate had started brightly.

Graeme Armstrong equalised almost instantly with a well-taken goal from inside the area. But it was Gari Rowntree's free kick close to half time which proved decisive.

Boston United tasted defeat for the first time this season with a 2-1 reverse at the hands of fellow newcomers Nuneaton Town.

Lee Moore fired the Boro ahead after 12 minute and Guy Hadland doubled their tally with a 63rd minute effort.

Miles Hunter pulled one back for the Pilgrims 5 minutes from time, but it was a case of too little, too late as Boro held on to claim the points.

Another of the new boys, Guiseley, shared a goalless draw with Blyth Spartans played at Nethermoor, while Stafford Rangers won 2-0 against Ilkeston Town at the New Manor Ground.

Fabrice Kasiama opened Rangers` account after 15 minutes and Ross Davidson made it 2-0 with 13 minutes remaining.

In a high-tempo game at Damson Park, Solihull Moors eventually came out 2-0 winners against Eastwood Town, who concentrated on the long ball to the giant Matt Rhead.

For a time, Solihull were sucked into this tactic, but when they started their passing game down the flanks, they were far more dangerous.

Joel Grandison made a nuisance of himself, so much so that Town put two defenders on him. Ryan Beswick’s beautiful left leg was well employed at free kicks.

Singh did have saves to make, but they were few and far between. Still Solihull were goalless. For all their superiority, they had not managed to put the ball into the net.

Then on 45 minutes, Alex Price sent in a good centre, only for Cooke to put through his own gaol.

Town made two changes for the re-start and tried to pen Solihull back. Then they self-distructed. Rhead hit Charlie O’Loughlin and the referee sent him off.

Eastwood responded better than did the Moors. In fact now their aerial attacking force had gone, they played more on the pitch and were far more successful.

Solihull found it hard to break them down, and it was not until a minute from normal time that Adam Cunnington went to the corner flag to run down the clock. He sensed the defender was not a tight as he might be and sent over a great cross. This found Joel Grandison, who beat his man and scored from 18 yards.

Still Town did not give in, they forced Singh to make another save and even managed a shot of target - their first of the second half.

Vauxhall Motors picked up their first win of the new campaign with 3-1 win against Stalybridge Celtic at Bower Fold.

A Jody Banim penalty gave Celtic the lead right on half time but Laquan Esdaille put the ball in his own net on 54 minutes to level the scores before Andy Taylor struck a 62nd goal to put Motors in the driving seat.

Neil Prince knocked in a 82nd minute goal to wrap up the result and give the travelling supporters reason for cheer.
