Saturday`s Blue Square South Review....
03 April 2010 17:53:00

Although the title race is over, the battle to get into the play-off places in Blue Square South is really hotting up.

Staines Town lost on Friday to Worcester City to keep as many as possibly ten clubs still with varying chances of making the top five at the end of the season.

However, one or two of Saturday`s outcomes didn`t help some teams, including Eastleigh, who were beaten by another of the contenders, Dover Athletic at Crabble.

The Whites opened the scoring courtesy of Adam Birchall`s 27th minute effort.

An Olly Schulz own goal on 66 minutes pulled the Spitfires back into the game, but Joe Tabiri won it for Dover 10 minutes from time.

Second-placed Chelmsford City had to be content with a point from a 3-3 draw at Hayes Lane against Bromley, whose Ryan Hall gave them a 21st minute lead.

Dave Rainford equalised 5 minutes later, but less than a minute later Rob Gillman restored the home side`s lead and the goals kept coming as 5 minutes later new signing Warren McBean scored against his former club to make it 2-2.

Ricky Holmes then made it 3-2 to City with 7 minutes of the second half gone, and that looked like being the winner until Jay Sobers pounced for a last-gasp Bromley leveller.

Only four points separate Chelmsford and fifth-placed Staines, while Welling United, Thurrock, whose game against Hampton & Richmond Borough was waterlogged off on Saturday, and Bath City, who beat Dorchester Town on Friday, are all on fifty-nine points.

Four and five points further adrift are Havant & Waterlooville and Woking respectively. However, only the Cards won on Saturday, Craig Faulconbridge`s 20th and 60th minute efforts proving enough to hammer another nail in Lewes` Blue Square South coffin.

The Hawks were held to a 1-1 draw at the Camrose by Basingstoke Town, whose Matt Warner gave them a 25th minute lead that Mustafa Tiryaki equalised 5 minutes before the break.

St Albans City`s play-off chances have gone now and they were comprehensively beaten 4-2 at Clarence Park by neighbours Bishop`s Stortford.

Danny Morgan opened the scoring after 19 minutes and Lynvall Duncan doubled the Blues` advantage on 39 minutes, with Leon Antoine making it game over 2 minutes from the half time break.

The Saints did manage to pull a couple back through Gary Cohen on 49 minutes and Ian Dunn on 77, but the damage was done in the opening 45 minutes.

Relegated Weymouth could have almost taken Weston-super-Mare with them had they beaten the Seagulls at the Wessex Stadium.

However, after Tom Richardson had broken the deadlock by giving the Terras the lead just past the hour-mark, Clayton Fortune levelled with 12 minutes to go and 2 minutes from time Jermaine Clarke won it for Weston.

Champions Newport County haven`t allowed their standards to drop and beat Maidenhead United 4-1 at Spytty Park.

Dave Gilroy opened the Exiles` scoring after 11 minutes and Craig Reid added number two 6 minutes later.

He should have made it 3-0 shortly afterwards, but spurned his opportunity from the penalty spot.

Danny Rose did make it 3-0 in the 68th minute and Scott Rogers added a fourth 4 minutes later, with Sam Collins netting a consolation for the Magpies a couple of minutes later.
