Tuesday night`s Third Qualifying Round Third Qualifying Round replays rounded-up....
In the night`s original Third Qualifying Round tie, Zamaretto League Premier Division Truro City booked their place in the First Round for the first time in the club's history at the expense of Blue Square North visitors Gloucester City on Tuesday night.
Arran Pugh's first half strike was enough to hand City victory over the Tigers on a blustery evening at Treyew Road.
With the heavy wind behind them in the opening 45 minutes Sean McCarthy's men created a number of goalscoring chances.
But at the interval Pugh's 28th minute goal was all that separated the sides. Pugh claimed the final touch at the back post when he forced the ball home with the help of the upright from Lee Hodges' wind-assisted free kick.
And even with gale force winds behind them in the second half, Gloucester failed to break down a stubborn home defence as Truro clinched a place in the next round on December 12th.
A Justin Marsden goal booked Zamaretto Premier Nuneaton Town their place in next round as they overcame Blue Square North strugglers Hyde United at in their Third Qualifying Round replay Liberty Way.
Marsden converted the easiest of chances from close range in the 84th minute following excellent work from teenage midfielder James Armson.
Boro now face a trip to the winners of next Tuesday’s Workington versus Solihull Moors clash.
Ryman League Premier Division Carshalton Athletic caused something of an upset by ousting Blue Square South strugglers Weston-super-Mare at Colston Avenue.
Kenny Beaney opened the scoring for Carshalton Athletic after 9 minutes and Richard Jolly made it 2-0 midway through the first half.
There was an argument between Weston`s Jack Compton and his skipper Adi Harris, resulting in Harris being sent-off.
Beaney struck again on 64 minutes with another superb free kick and Weston grabbed a consolation when Clayton Fortune turned in a corner.
That guarantees that at least one Ryman club will reach the Second Round as Carshalton now host Division One North side Northwood.
James Baker scored 6 minutes before half time to give Ryman Premier relegation battlers Billericay Town a 1-0 win at Top Field against Zamaretto Division One Midlands Hitchin Town and earn them a trip to Nene Park to face Blue Square Premier outfit Rushden & Diamonds.
Alfreton Town exited the Trophy after their replay defeat in extra-time against Blue Square North rivals Corby Town.
The first 90 minutes ended goalless and it took a Matt Wilson own goal on 97 minutes to break the deadlock between two evenly matched sides.
Wilson turned a right byline cross from substitute Jamie McGhee past Paddy Gamble as he attempted to stop the ball reaching Leon Mettam at the far post.
Paul Clayton equalised 16 seconds into the second period of extra time when he slipped in between the last defender and Corby keeper Mark Osborn who was stranded by Clayton's 14 yard clipped shot.
The winner came on 116 minutes when Mettam received a cross from the right and rifled home into the roof of the net from 16 yards.
Another all-Blue Square North replay between AFC Telford United and Stalybridge Celtic also went the way of the visitors.
Shane Killock gave Telford the boost of an early 3rd minute lead at the New Bucks Head, but Keith Briggs equalised after 19 minutes and Celtic won it when Joe O'Neill made it 2-1 with just a couple of minutes of the second half played.
Another Blue Square North outfit, Gainsborough Trinity, needed penalties to overcome UniBondf League Premier Division North Ferriby United at the Northolme.
The Blues looked to be on course for victory when Nathan Peat netted a penalty to put the home side 2-1 ahead with just minutes to go. Darryn Stamp had earlier given them a 1-0 lead.
But Ferriby netted to take the game into extra-time in which there were a further two goals – Trinity's scored by Wes Parker – before Darren Dunning's spot-kick ensured a 3-2 penalty shoot-out win.
Blue Square North high-flyers Southport will be relieved to get through after Zamaretto League Premier Division Stourbridge gave them two very tough matches.
At Haig Avenue in the replay on Tuesday, Stourbridge deservedly took a 21st minute lead, courtesy of a 35-yard Drew Canavan blockbuster.
It took`Port until 3 minutes before the break to equalise through Chris Lever and then
Steve Daly gave the Sandgrounders an early second half lead.
But Southport’s advantage was promptly cancelled when Ryan Rowe pounced to level the scores once more.
The tie finally swung the home side`s way when Nathan Bennett sent the ball into his own net with 6 minutes to go and then Daly made sure with a penalty after he had been fouled.
Two other Blue Square North sides to progress in replays were Hinckley United and Ilkeston Town – in the Knitters` case, comprehensively!
Hinckley were involved in a dramatic encounter against former FA Vase winners AFC Fylde at the Greene King Stadium.
The UniBond League Division One North side started the game brightly only for the home side to take an 8th minute lead through Adam Webster slightly against the run of play.
Alex Taylor then fired in a second for Hinckley on 22 minutes and it was 3-0 just 4 minutes later when Webster grabbed an opportunist second goal.
A shell-shocked Fylde then hit back with a goal from Matt Mahoney to make it 3-1 after 32 minutes.
The visitors had further chances to get back into the game only for Webster to complete his hat trick with what should have been a killer fourth goal on 37 minutes, but Fylde were far from finished.
After the break they pulled back another goal back when Matt Walwyn beat Hinckley keeper Chris McKenzie from outside the box with an unstoppable drive to make it 4-2 on 50 minutes.
Five minutes later it was 4-3 with Walwyn again the scorer. But Richard Lavery gave the home side a 5-3 lead on 57 minutes and they made it 6-3 when Webster hit his fourth of the game and the seventh arrived when that man Webster hit his FIFTH of the game.
The Knitters will now face Blue Square Premier side York City in the next round.
It wasn`t quite as dramatic at Seel Park, where another UniBond Division One North side, Mossley, were hoping to take advantage of a home replay against Ilkeston.
But after a goalless first half, Gary Ricketts put the Reds in front 10 minutes into the second period and the experienced striker added a second on the hour-mark to make sure.
Blue Square South Chelmsford City finally buried their AFC Hornchurch demons at Bridge Avenue, thanks to a pair of Simon Glover goals early in the second half, paving the way for a First Round Proper meeting with Truro City at Melbourne Stadium.
Having recovered from Saturday’s shocking late collapse, the Clarets knocked-out their plucky Ryman League Premier Division opponents at the second attempt, despite another late goal from Jamie Dormer threatening to spoil City’s party again. On this occasion, the Chelmsford rearguard held firm and Head Coach Glenn Pennyfather was ultimately satisfied.
“The players took a lot of criticism on Saturday from all quarters but they stood up to be counted tonight on a difficult pitch,” he explained after the match. “We knew the game would be one of few chances and that we would have to take ours. People will have expected us to slip-up in this match, and of course it was natural that we were edgy when they pulled one back, but I’m proud of how we responded to Saturday.”
Changes were bound to be made to the starting eleven after a difficult weekend, though the two alterations will have had a hint of injury about them. Impressive young centre-half Mark Haines returned to the line-up instead of Steve Ward, while Ollie Berquez was selected in the middle of midfield, replacing the previously ever-present John Martin.
City had slightly the better of a quiet opening period but it wasn’t until mid-way through the first half that they started to take a hold in the long grass and ferocious wind. Antonio Murray worked his way through to the right of the goal while being pursued by a pair of defenders who will have affected his final, scuffed strike at goalkeeper Darren Behcet. Ricky Holmes also went close with a header as the hosts played mostly deep passes.
Hornchurch crafted a free header from a corner for skipper Elliot Styles just before the interval but, two minutes into the second half, their opponents broke the deadlock. A free kick on the left and mid-way into Urchins territory was curled into the danger area by Matthew Lock where Glover got the final touch to put Chelmsford ahead. He then went one better on 55 minutes, Holmes earning another dead ball which was swerved in again from the right for Glover to head over Behcet and into the net.
Around the hour mark the hosts began to attempt some in-roads into the deficit with a handful of free-kicks, while a half-chance in the City area was later blocked. Then a 79th-minute goal arrived which put the visitors in a familiar position, a corner from the left swinging into the box where Dormer headed past ‘keeper Craig Holloway.
The difference on the night, however, despite a frantic scramble in front of their own goal towards the end, was Chelmsford’s ability to see the game out and advance to the next stage. Without intending to get ahead of himself, Glenn even felt sufficiently comfortable to put City’s name back in the frame as potential winners, concluding: “The year we won the competition with Canvey Island we started with a scrappy draw against Harlow so, with a bit of luck, who knows!”
