Monday`s Blue Square South Review....
28 December 2009 17:44:00

Newport County are thirteen points clear at the top of Blue Square South going into the New Year following Monday`s comfortable 3-0 win over struggling Dorchester Town at Spytty Park.

It was Craig Reid who broke the deadlock with the opening goal after 57 minutes, and he quickly doubled that 7 minutes later.

And 6 minutes from time, the majority in the excellent 2,205 crowd had victory confirmed when Gary Warren added number three.

Chelmsford City are second after a second successive Christmas holiday 1-0 win, this time at faltering Dover Athletic, who in contrast suffered a second defeat in three days.

Rob Edmans scored the only goal of the game 3 minutes after half time, and to make matters worse for Andy Hessenthaler`s men, both Dean Hill after 77 minutes and Jamie Rogers a minute from time, were sent-off – Hill`s being a straight red.

Woking are third after a hard-fought 2-1 win over second-bottom Weston-super-Mare at Kingfield.

Crystal Palace loanee Matthew Wright gave the Cards a great start with a goal inside 2 minutes.

However, a Delano Sam-Yorke own goal after 19 minutes restored parity, but Wright pounced to net his and Woking`s second with 15 minutes remaining.

Struggling Lewes, surprise 6-2 winners over Dover on Saturday, were on the wrong end of a 3-1 defeat on Monday at Thurrock, who are back up to fourth as a result.

Matt Bodkin put the Essex side ahead 8 minutes after half time only for Jack Walder to equalise 3 minutes later.

Leon McKenzie restored Thurrock`s lead on the hour-mark and then made sure with his second and the home side`s third in the final minute of normal time.

Braintree Town missed the opportunity to move into the play-off places when they were held to a 1-1 Cressing Road draw by lowly Hampton & Richmond Borough.

Recent signing Karl Beckford put the visiting Beavers in front after 29 minutes.

Michael Power eventually pulled the Iron back on terms with 13 minutes to go, but they were unable to find a winner.

Worcester City moved out of the bottom three after a narrow 1-0 win at the Camrose against out-of-form Basingstoke Town.

Marc McGregor scored the only goal of the game with 9 minutes left to play.

Elsewhere, Gillingham loanee Andy Pugh bagged a brace after 22 and 89 minutes as Welling United won 2-1 at St Albans City.

Drew Roberts, who scored twice on Saturday, had pulled the Saints back on terms 7 minutes into the second half.

Bromley halted Eastleigh`s charge towards the top five with a 3-0 Hayes Lane victory in which Warren McBean broke the deadlock after 63 minutes.

An Ashley Carew penalty 11 minutes from time virtually assured the win, with Marcus Cassius making sure with a third 5 minutes before the end.

Louis Riddle had Bishop`s Stortford in front after 18 minutes at Staines Town, whose Richard Butler eventually levelled on 53 minutes.

But Bertie Brayley restored the Blues` lead on the hour-mark before Ali Chaaban equalised once more for the Swans with 9 minutes to go.
