Boxing Day`s Blue Square North Review....
26 December 2009 18:14:00

Only five games survived in Blue Square North on Boxing Day. However, fortunately one of them was the top of the table clash at Haig Avenue where leaders Southport enjoyed an emphatic 5-0 win over second-placed neighbours Fleetwood Town.

A crowd of 1,840 saw Earl Davis open the Sandgrounders` account after 9 minutes.

Ciaran Kilheeney added a second just before the break, Michael Powell bagged a brace in the 50th and 74th minutes and Davis scored his second and `Port`s fifth with 12 minutes remaining.

Hinckley United continued their climb towards the play-off places following a 4-2 win at Damson Park over Solihull Moors, who find themselves only a point above the relegation places.

Ryan Beswick actually gave Moors a 37th minute lead, but by the time Mark Gardner scored their second, on-loan Rushden & Diamonds` striker Sam Smith had scored four times with goals in the 41st, 56th, 64th and 66th minutes.

AFC Telford United beat Stafford Rangers 2-1 at the New Bucks Head in front of the biggest crowd of the day in the division, 2,200, with the home side's goals coming from Liam Blakeman after 33 minutes and Andre Gray 3 minutes from time after Ishmail Reid had put the visitors ahead after just 4 minutes.

Corby Town are a point off the play-off places but will be very disappointed to have allowed a 2-0 lead to disappear at the Rockingham Triangle against Gainsborough Trinity, who climbed out of the bottom three as a result.

The Steelmen looked to be in control after Brett Solkhon and Leon Mettam helped them establish a two-goal lead in just over an hour.

But Trinity kept probing and as Corby continually backed off, they finally got their reward with two goals in the last 12 minutes.

But Ashley Burbeary headed home a right-wing cross 12 minutes from time and the experienced Paul Mayo attempted to head a cross back to his keeper but only succeeded in finding the bottom corner of his own net 2 minutes from the end.

Redditch United completed a convincing 4-1 win over Gloucester City, with Andy Ducros and Matt Blair scoring twice in the opening 8 minutes.

New signing Gareth Sheldon bagged a brace in the 68th and 85th minutes, with new boy Ben Hunt netting a consolation for the Tigers in the last minute.
