Saturday`s Blue Square Premier Review....
12 September 2009 18:37:00

Oxford United maintained their unbeaten start to the season and moved seven points clear at the top of the Blue Square Premier after beating fancied Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground.

James Constable took advantage of slack Wrexham marking at a corner to head what proved to be the winner from close range on 29 minutes.

A scuffle between Constable and Marc Williams saw Wrexham's veteran defender Frank Sinclair shown a second yellow for his reaction 12 minutes from time.

Dragons boss Dean Saunders was also sent-off, while Oxford finished with ten-men as well when Steve Kinniburgh saw two yellows 6 minutes from the end.

Luton Town bounced back from their first defeat to see off struggling Barrow 1-0 at Kenilworth Road.

The only goal of the game came after 20 minutes throughAdam Newton from just outside the area.

Stevenage Borough recovered from two goals down to end Mansfield Town's fifteen-game unbeaten home run.

Things looked bleak for Boro after Kyle Perry opened the scoring for the Stags in the first minute and then doubled the home side's lead in the 15th minute.

But the game turned on Perry being sent-off for a high boot to Lee Boylan's face.

Chris Beardsley pulled one back on 52 minutes, and Yemi Odubade equalised 6 minutes later before he set up Griffin to net the winner on 68 minutes.

York City overtook Kettering Town in the table, thanks to Richard Brodie's brace at the KitKat Crescent.

City deservedly led 11 minutes after the break when Brodie fired home Djoumin Sangare's ball from close range.

The striker then sealed the points 12 minutes later with a header from another Sangare ball.

Tamworth and Hayes & Yeading United shared the spoils from a 2-2 draw at Church Road.

Adam Green fired home a free kick to put the home side ahead on the half-hour mark.

Trevor Benjamin equalised 10 minutes after the break and midfielder Michael Blackwood put the Lambs ahead from close range on 67 minutes.

On-loan Sean Canham equalised 10 minutes later to earn the home side a point.

Three games ended in goalless draws.

Cambridge United slipped to seventh in the table when they played out to a bore draw with AFC Wimbledon at Kingsmeadow, while mid-table sides Altrincham and Crawley Town did likewise at Moss Lane.

Forest Green Rovers' new boss Dave Hockaday had to be satisfied with a point from his first game in charge at the New Lawn against Ebbsfleet United.

But with new signings Lewwis Spence, Jeffrey Imudia and keeper David Wilkinson making their debuts, Rovers dominated throughout.

They had a plethora of chances, only to come up against an inspired Lance Cronin, who kept the hosts at bay.

First half goals from Steve Richardson and Kris Gate proved enough to earn Gateshead a 2-0 International Stadium win over Salisbury City.

Gate gave the hosts an 8th minute lead and Richardson doubled their advantage 6 minutes before the break.

Matty Tubbs scored from the spot just after the break to give Salisbury hope but that all but vanished when Daniel Webb was sent-off for two bookings 15 minutes from time.

Chester City came from behind with a disputed penalty to earn a draw on their first-ever trip to Eastbourne Borough.

Boro were ahead after just 4 minutes when Andy Atkin latched onto a poor Kevin Roberts backpass to net.

But Chester levelled in first half stoppage time from the penalty spot through Gregg Blundell after Matt Crabb's challenge on Neil Ashton was punished.

Rushden & Diamonds came from behind three times after the break and grabbed an injury-time winner on an amazing afternoon at Nene Park against Grays Athletic.

Matt Pattison's early strike was cancelled out on the stroke of half time and the game exploded into life during the second period.

Lee Tomlin created the opener on 9 minutes with a crossfield pass to Pattison who cut inside and hit a left-foot shot which deflected past keeper Lee Butcher.

Craig Farrell hit the post, Jamie Stuart was denied by a goalline clearance and Paul Terry's shot was kicked out by Butcher.

Grays changed their formation but needed good fortune to equalise as Glenn Poole's free kick struck Kurt Robinson and looped over Diamonds` keeper Dale Roberts.

Poole's free kick was converted by Jack Oberstellar but on the counter-attack Tomlin levelled, only for Kenny Davis to make it 3-2 almost immediately.

Substitute James Reid got another equaliser and Grays skipper Anwar Uddin headed home midway through the second half.

Diamonds got their fourth goal in controversial circumstances as the referee awarded a penalty for handball – despite Aaron O'Connor glancing in Tomlin's cross. Tomlin tucked away the spot-kick.

Then the first minutes of stoppage-time Tomlin set up Cliff Akurang, who headed home the winner.

Craig Hammond scored a late equaliser to earn Histon a point from their clash with Kidderminster Harriers at the Glassworld Stadium.

Chris McPhee put Harriers` in front after 34 minutes and that looked like being the winner until substitute Hammond popped up with the Stutes` equaliser 5 minutes from time.
