Fleetwood Through on Penalties
02 May 2010 19:20:00

Fleetwood Town will meet Alfreton Town in the Blue Square North play-off final next Sunday at Highbury after a dramatic penalty shoot-out semi final win over Droylsden on Sunday.

A crowd of 2,862 on the Fylde coast saw the home side dominate the majority of the game but a solid Bloods` backline and some indifferent finishing prevented Micky Mellon`s side winning outright.

Holding a healthy 2-0 lead from last Wednesday`s first-leg, Droylsden held Fleetwood at bay until the 35th minute when Gareth Seddon pulled one back on aggregate with a near post header.

However, just 6 minutes later the scores were level overall when Jamie Milligan`s free kick left Craig Mawson in the Bloods` goal clawing thin air.

Despite plenty of pressure, Fleetwood were unable to find a winner in normal time, so the tie went into extra-time.

But with seconds left in the first period of overtime defender Simon Grand (pictured) headed his first goal of the season to make it 3-0 on the day and 3-2 on aggregate, things looked good for the Cod Army.

Celebrations were premature though as, with 7 minutes remaining, Lee Roche equalised and eventually sent the game into a penalty shoot-out.

Both sides missed one apiece – Nick Rogan slotted his fourth home for the hosts, but Liam Brownhill missed the final Bloods` spot-kick when his effort was saved by Danny Hurst to send the home crowd wild.
