Monday`s Blue Square Premier Review....
05 April 2010 18:34:00

Blue Square Premier leaders Stevenage Borough past their first tesy - by securing at least a play-off place after 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon.

Boro needed just 9 minutes to stamp their authority when Andy Drury's flick back into the area was finished by Mark Roberts.

Just 2 minutes later the Dons were left shell-shocked as Lawrie Wilson found the bottom corner from Joel Byrom's pass.

Boro were completely dominant and should have had a third when Tim Sills missed from close range with the goal at his mercy.

Wimbledon - their own play-off hopes fast fading - made a rare foray forward and Sam Hatton forced Chris Day into a fine save.

Danny Kedwell and Glenn Poole did their best to find a way back into the clash for the Dons but the home side rounded off the win when Eddie Odhiambo notched number three in added time.

Luton Town`s merciless pursuit of Stevenage continued as they demolished already-relegated Grays Athletic 6-0 at Kenilworth Road.

Having plundered seventeen goals in their previous four games at home, Richard Money's men notched another six to remain two points behind Boro.

It actually took the Hatters some time to get going but they never looked back after Tom Craddock headed home Simon Heslop's cross with 32 minutes on the clock.

Veteran Kevin Gallen quickly joined him on the scoreboard by firing home from 25 yards after Keith Keane played a free kick into his path before the same player made it three 5 minutes before the break when he took in Craddock's pass.

Craddock made it four on the stroke of half time with a clinical finish from close range before Gallen completed his treble with a header shortly before the hour-mark.

Substitute Craig Nelthorpe also hit a post for Luton before Liam Hatch completed the rout with 10 minutes to go.

Alfie Potter's late winner fired Oxford United to only a second victory in nine games against struggling Salisbury City at the Kassam Stadium.

The home side dominated the game but had to wait until 5 minutes from time when Potter headed past James Bittner from Mark Creighton's flick-on.

The goal came moments after the substitute winger had an effort ruled out for offside following Bittner's parry from Adam Chapman's shot.

Matty Tubbs had City's best chance but his speculative effort went over.

Their play-off place will be guaranteed if they pick up one more point in their remaining five games - or if AFC Wimbledon fail to win one of their remaining games.

Salisbury are just four points clear of the relegation places after Potter's late intervention.

Rushden & Diamonds maintained their play-off push with a hard-earned 1-1 draw at Aggborough against Kidderminster Harriers.

They could have gone ahead early on when Rob Wolleaston fired wide from close range after 4 minutes.

The deadlock was broken in the 26th minute, courtesy of Diamonds` midfielder Max Porter, who tried his luck from range to net his third goal of the campaign.

But the hosts needed just 9 second half minutes to draw even, Darryl Knights on target from the edge of the box after a Robbie Matthews nod down.

Harriers almost won it, thanks to Brian Smikle`s left-footed effort that was tipped round a post by Diamonds` keeper Dale Roberts.

And they should have won it when Roberts was adjudged to have fouled Smikle in the box in added time but he redeemed himself to block Chris McPhee`s well-struck penalty.

Richard Brodie's injury-time penalty saw York City come from a goal behind to extend their unbeaten run to six games with a 2-1 victory over Altrincham at the KitKat Crescent.

The play-off chasing Minstermen went behind after a goalless first half when Chris Denham fired from outside the area to give Alty the lead. But Martin Foyle's men were level within 6 minutes when David McGurk struck with a close-range shot.

Brodie secured the win from the spot after being brought down by Greg Young.

The Minstermen could have taken the lead straight after the break but the referee waved away Brodie's protests after he was brought down in the area.

City's top scorer also had a header cleared off the line before then having a goal ruled out for offside.

Kettering Town`s slim hopes of reaching the play-offs are all but over after they were held 1-1 by ten-man Histon at the Elgood Brewery Stadium.

The Stutes played an hour with ten-men after Daniel Wright was dismissed for shoving James Jennings, following a tackle by the Poppies defender.

Jennings then fired Kettering into the lead from 10 yards out after David Knight saved his initial effort.

Nathaniel Knight-Percival hit a post for Histon, before Lee Smith's 25-yard free kick rescued a point.

James Dance rattled the woodwork with 16 minutes left for the Poppies, who would need to win their remaining three games and hope York lose their final five - making up fourteen goals in the process.

A late Danny Crow penalty handed ten-man Cambridge United victory against Mansfield Town at the Abbey Stadium.

The U's took the lead when Josh Coulson headed in Jai Reason's cross but their lead lasted just a minute as Jake Speight fired home to make it even.

Cambridge took the lead again from a Lee Phillips header but a 20-yard strike from Kyle Nix cancelled it out.

David Partridge saw red after two yellow cards but Crow's penalty sealed the win for the U's, with Jon Shaw missing from the spot minutes later.

Crawley Town dominated their encounter with Hayes & Yeading United at the Broadfield Stadium but were only able to pick up a narrow win.

Crawley started the far stronger of the two teams and they were nearly ahead inside a minute when Adam Quinn headed wide from six yards out.

The hosts continued to press and Clark Masters had to be alert to deny Michael Malcolm and then Danny Forrest.

Hayes held firm, however, and despite losing Esmond James to a serious injury, they were able to go into the break level. But their resistence was finally broke in the 57th minute when Crawley won a penalty after Matt Ruby sent Malcolm tumbling in the box.

Forrest stepped up to take the kick and he blasted straight down the middle to hand his team the points.

Wrexham failed to break down a resolute Gateshead defence at the Racecourse Ground as the Tynesiderds claimed a crucial point in their relegation battle.

The home side also ended with ten-men after Wrexham substitute Luke Holden picked up a second yellow card late on.

Gateshead had goalkeeper Paul Farman to thank for a fine display.

Kristian O'Leary and Andy Mangan went close for Wrexham early on, before Farman was again called into action to deny Mangan and then Wes Baynes.

Forest Green Rovers remain in the bottom three after relegation rivals Tamworth edged a seven-goal thriller.

Rovers led inside 2 minutes as Reece Styche set up Daniel Powell to net from six yards, but Tom Shaw levelled from the spot just 4 minutes later.

Brad Pritchard gave the Lambs the lead, but Conal Platt's 20-yard free kick made it 2-2 at half time.

Iyseden Christie set up Jake Sheridan for Tamworth, before netting himself - and Platt replied with a late penalty.

Moses Ashikodi`s second half double kept Ebbsfleet United`s survival hopes alive as they beat fellow strugglers Eastbourne Borough 3-1 at Stonebridge Road.

Knowing the importance of three points, the Fleet were in the ascendancy from the start and took an early lead through a moment of real quality after 7 minutes

Midfielder Stefan Bailey teed up the ball just inside the Boro half, before firing a low shot past Danny Knowles from 30 yards.

Boro came out strongly after the break, though, equalising through Matt Crabb`s wonder strike 3 minutes into the second period.

The visitors` equaliser forced a response from Ebbsfleet as Ashikodi put them back in front in the 63rd minute, before grabbing a second a minute later, his first goal a 25-yard screamer.

Joey Benjamin pulled a goal back but Eastbourne, but they could not grab an equaliser with Simon Weatherstone having an 81st-minute penalty saved by Lance Cronin after he was brought down by Dean Pooley, who saw red.
