Blue Square Premier club Histon have cancelled the contract of striker Craig Hammond following his return from a loan spell at Zamaretto League Division One Midlands AFC Sudbury.
The 21-year-old joined the Stutes from Royston Town in August 2009.
Manager Alan Lewer said: "We wanted to keep working with the boy as he's scored plenty of goals at lower levels.
"But the Conference is a different league and he needed to work on his movement and it wasn't clear if Craig wanted to put the time in."
Hammond scored over eighty goals for Royston in the Molten Spartan South Midlands League last season, but has netted just one league goal for Histon.
His current contract was due to run out over the summer but Lewer says it suited both parties to settle the matter early.
"You have to be prepared to work at it," Lewer added. "We've got the same issue at the moment with Charlie Sheringham - he's found it difficult coming up from the level below."
