Tuesday`s Blue Square South Review...
24 February 2010 08:55:00

A point from a 1-1 draw at Woodspring Park was definitely a better one for visiting Hampton & Richmond Borough than hosts Weston-super-Mare, who remain six points adrift of the safety mark in Blue Square South as a consequence.

On a pudding of a pitch, it was the Seasiders who drew first blood when Ben Cleverley shot them in front just a minute before the half time break.

But Weston were forced to accept a second consecutive 1-1 home draw and a third one-point haul in succession when Dave Tarpey`s free kick found its way into the back of the home net with 18 minutes remaining.

Weymouth are a point worse off than Weston, but at least they managed to stop a run of four straight defeats when a stoppage time equaliser salvaged them a draw against Braintree Town at the Wessex Stadium.

A mistake by new Terras` keeper Tim Sandercombe gifted George Purcell the opener for the Iron after 72 minutes, but substitutes Stephen Reed and Jake Reid combined to set up Matty Groves for a dramatic, last-gasp equaliser.

It was the least the Terras deserved for a strong finish and resilient display against their play-off chasing visitors.

Basingstoke Town produced a terrible second half display to lose 1-0 at the hands of Hampshire rivals Eastleigh at the Camrose.

Both sides had chances during a first half lacking in quality on a difficult surface but it was the visitors who went closest, Richard Gillespie skewing a fine headed chance wide.

Town were simply dreadful after the break, with Eastleigh having chance after chance before Anthony Rivere got the winner with 16 minutes to go, firing home from close range following a scramble in the box.

It was seventh time lucky for Bishop`s Stortford as they ended a six-match losing league streak with victory against Bromley at Woodside Park.

Midfielder Scott Shulton was the hero with two goals to earn the Blues their first success since beating Worcester City in mid-January.

Shulton opened the scoring after only 5 minutes when he fired in from 12 yards.

Four minutes after the interval, Shulton’s 35-yard free kick made it 2-0. And Max Lette Jallow got on the scoresheet on 68 minutes to make it game over at 3-0.
