Saturday`s Blue Square South Review...
27 February 2010 17:52:00

Newport County maintained their amazing twenty-one point lead at the top of the Blue Square South with a hard-fought 1-0 win over play-off chasing Braintree Town at Spytty Park on Saturday.

Sam Foley grabbed the all-important goal in the 62nd minute in front of a crowd of 2,117.

Braintree stay in the top five where Chelmsford City and Bath City also won - Thurrock were without a game.

Chelmsford won 2-0 at Maidenhead United, with Ricky Holmes on target after 22 minutes and Marlon Patterson with 5 minjtes remaining, while Bath won by the same scoreline at Welling United, whose own play-off hopes took a bad knock.

Kaid Mohamed gave City the lead 4 minutes before half time and Dave Gilroy made sure with a second in stoppage time.

Eastleigh have recovered well from their staggering 8-2 defeat last Saturday by winning twice since, including Saturday`s vital victory at Wheatsheaf Park against fellow contenders Staines Town.

Sam Butler put the Spitfires in front after 13 minutes and a Yadi Mambo own goal right on half time doubled their advantage.

Leroy Griffiths pulled one back from the penalty spot for the Swans with 7 minutes to go, but Ian Baird`s side held on to move to within a point of their opponents and the top five.

Bromley are only four points adrift of the play-off spots after beating bottom-markers Weymouth, who are beginning to need snookers to stay up now.

Ashley Carew put the home side in front after less than 4 minutes at Hayes Lane and Rob Gilman made it 2-0 after 22 minutes.

Richard Butler scored the third on 64 minutes and top scorer Warren McBean added a fourth with 19 minutes to go.

The other two games ended all-square. Dorchester Town moved another step closer to safety, but had to be content with a 1-1 Jewson Avenue Stadium draw with Woking, whose Nathanial Pinney looked to have won it for the Cards when he broke the deadlock with less than 7 minutes remaining.

However, Ryan Hill popped up with a Magpies` equaliser 2 minutes from time.

The other draw was between the two teams, Lewes and Worcester City, occupying third and fourth-bottom places in the division.

And they produced a thriller at the Dripping Pan as Worcester mounted an amazing comeback from being three-down to share the spoils.

Marc McGregor came off the bench to score twice after Worcester found themselves 3-0 down with 18 minutes to go following Joe Keehan's penalty and strikes from Kane Louis and David Wheeler.

But Graham Ward gave the visitors a 72nd minute lifeline and McGregor struck twice, including the equaliser in the 92nd minute, to complete a stunning fightback and stay two points ahead of the Rooks.
