There were a number of `surprise` results on Saturday, with undoubtedly Zamaretto League Division One South & West villagers Bishops Cleeve`s 3-0 hammering of Blue Square South side Weymouth top of the pile.
Ben Gascoigne gave Cleeve a 32nd minute lead that Kevin Slack added to with further goals in the 44th and 62nd minutes.
It was certainly an outcome the cash-strapped Terras did not want.
The Aspire Midland Alliance had two representatives left in the cup and both were up against Blue Square North opponents – and they still have two representatives in Monday`s draw as Coventry Sphinx and Stratford Town earned excellent draws.
Stratford`s chances of progressing are that much better as they will host Redditch United on their own patch in their replay next week after a 1-1 draw in which Danny Lennox gave them a 28th minute lead that Liam Francis cancelled out 5 minutes before half time.
Sphinx had a great chance for glory as they found themselves 2-0 up with goals by Calvin Phillips and Jerome Murdoch by the 28th minute.
However, Stafford Rangers fought back to equalised with a Tom Thorley spot-kick 5 minutes after the break and a Ben Mills strike on the hour-mark.
A 77th minute goal from Ben Codling earned Ryman Division One North side Heybridge Swifts a 1-0 win over Blue Square South visitors St Albans City at Scraley Road.
Zamaretto Premier newcomers Truro City won 5-2 at York Road against Blue Square South Maidenhead United.
Santos Gaia, Scott Walker and Martin Watts had the Cornwalians three-up by the break. A Gaia own goal immediately after the restart gave the Magpies hope only for Les Afful and Joe Broad to make it 5-1 before Maidenhead managed a second reply.
UniBond Premier side Bradford Park Avenue coasted past Blue Square North visitors Harrogate Town 4-0 with goals from Chris Hall on 12 minutes and a Luke Gibson hat trick in the 26th, 36th and 82nd minutes.
Another Blue Square North side to bite the dust – and at home too – were Droylsden, who were beaten 2-0 at the Butcher`s Arms by FC Halifax Town, whose Steve Payne after 21 minutes and James Dean 2 minutes from time sealed victory.
Bulmers Cider Kent Leaguers Hythe Town forced a replay after a heroic 2-2 draw at home to Blue Square South side Woking, who are more used to causing cup upsets than being one themselves!
Hythe took an early lead through Pat Kingwell and led 1-0 at half time. Woing went 2-1 up with goals from Anane on 71 minutes and Guiseppe Sole 7 minutes later before Hythe earned their replay with an 81st minute equaliser from Roy Guiver.
A battling performance wasn't enough for Corby Town as they went out with a 2-1 defeat at Blue Square North rivals Eastwood Town.
The Steelmen suffered a nightmare start when Eastwood took the lead in just the 2nd minute as Danny Holland's shot deflected in off Chris Hope.
Holland converted a penalty in first-half stoppage time after being brought down by Corby keeper Mark Osborn to make it 2-0.
However, Holland failed to appear for the second half having suffered a suspected broken ankle in the aftermath of his goal. And Corby came out in positive mood for the second half and were rewarded on 57 minutes when the in-form Steve Diggin slotted home his fifth in four games. Bit try as they did, the visitors were unable to find an equaliser.
Another Blue Square North side, Alfreton Town, cruised into the next round by beating West Midlands (Regional) League minnows AFC Wulfrunians.
A goal from Aiden Flint after only 45 seconds set the Reds on their way and two each from Liam Hearne and Jordan Hall gave the home side a 5-0 interval lead.
Craig Reid bagged a brace and Nathan Davies one as Blue Square South side Newport County went through 3-1 at Zamaretto Premier Clevedon Town.
However, that doesn`t tell the whole story as Clevedon had two players and manager Nicky Tucker sent-off, while County`s Martyn Giles also saw red!
Blue Square South side Bromley beat FTL Futbol Hellenic Leaguers Flackwell Heath 2-0 but the Heathens had their keeper Sam Southerden sent-off in the 68th minute for a `professional` foul.
However, by then he had alreasy conceded goals from Warren McBean and Mark Corneille just after half time.
Mark Jermyn netted three goals in just 15 minutes to set Blue Square South Dorchester Town on their way to a comfortable 4-0 victory over Zamaretto League Division One South & West side Hungerford Town.
Last round `giantkillers` Pegasus Juniors faced an away trip to AFC Telford United of the Blue Square North and were beaten 4-1 in front of 1,136 spectators, with Cory Hyde scoring the Peggy consolation.
An own goal gave Telford the lead just before half time and then Danny Carey-Bertram settled nerves with a second straight after the break, with Andy Brown on 72 and Steve Torpey in stoppage time, adding the others.
Other Blue Square North sides in Monday`s draw are Blyth Spartans, who hammered UniBond Division One North Ossett Albion 7-1 with Michael Tait ensuring his dad of the same name enjoys his Saturday night with a hat trick – Paul Brayson, Ian Graham and a Robbie Dale penalty being the others on the mark.
Ryan Semple bagged a brace to save Gainsborough Trinity`s blushes at UniBond Division One South Market Drayton Town, whose Jamie Haynes had equalised from the spot, while Solihull Moors edged a seven-goal thriller at another UniBond South outfit, Mickleover Sports, who led 2-0 before Greg Mills bagged a brace to eventually see Moors through.
Stalybridge Celtic got through their potential banana skin at UniBond Premier Stocksbridge Park Steels with flying colours, winning 7-2 after Jamie Vardy, who scored both, had given Steels a 29th minute lead.
Matty Barlow netted twice for Steve Burr`s men as did Keith Briggs.
Lee Furlong took centre stage for Vauxhall Motors as they hammered cup hero Harry Dunn`s Whitby Town 5-0 at the Turnbull Ground.
Furlong hit four of the goals – all in the second period – with Chris Noone adding the other.
Workington`s Jonny Wright was another hat trick hero as thr Reds eased past Cammell Laird 4-1 at Borough Park.
Blue Square South sides through were Worcester City, who booked their place in the next round with a 3-0 victory over Hereward Teamwear United Counties League Premier Division side Bourne Town at St George's Lane.
Louis Bridges gave City the lead after 27 minutes but Bourne came back into the game in the second half.
Rob Davies added a second in the 81st minute and fellow sub Marco Adaggio powered home a header 2 minutes from time.
A deflected Steve Walker free kick as early as the 4th minute eventually took Havant & Waterlooville through at Blue Square South rivals Weston-super-Mare, while Thurrock edged another all-BSS tie 3-2 at Bishop`s Stortford.
No problems for Dover Athletic, who hit eight without reply at Crabble against Sussex County Leaguers East Preston, with and a Jon Wallis hat trick and a Lee Browning brace accounting for five of the goals.
Another team in the goals were Eastleigh, who hammered FTL Futbol Hellenic League Witney United 6-1 away from home, while Bath City hit five without reply at Toolstation Western League Willand Rovers, with Darren Edwards hitting a first half hat trick. He was joined on the scoresheet by Romanian midfielder Florin Pelecaci and Kaid Mohamed.
Anthony Cook’s double, combined with further strikes from Ricky Modeste, captain Dave Rainford and Rob Edmans, eased Chelmsford City into the Third Qualifying Round and one step closer to Wembley in a game head coach Glenn Pennyfather labelled as ‘perfectly executed’.
All five goals came in a scintillating second half at Goffs Lane after City frustrated the Essex Senior League club in the first. The visitors also pocketed £4,500 in prize money and Pennyfather was delighted to have avoided an upset, explaining: “We did a professional job as it was a massive game for Enfield. We showed sufficient application and desire on a flat but rock hard pitch and we knew we’d have to battle in the first half. Our fitness took over after the break and we executed our game plan perfectly.”
City were in the handy position of being able the same team for consecutive weeks as all except the long-term injured were declared fit for play. Looking to take full advantage of their three-division advantage in status, the visiting Clarets made a brief early impression on Daniel M’Baky’s goal when striker Danny Hockton’s deft chip was goalbound only for a home defender to scramble the ball desperately off the goal-line. Aside from that opportunity there was a handful of half-chances shared between the sides. Chelmsford were enjoying substantial possession but they were unable to craft a killer pass.
At the other end, City goalkeeper Craig Holloway had to remain alert to make a reflex, point-blank save to deny Enfield as they attempted to make-up the gap in status. Though they were thankful towards the end of the first half when only the Assistants flag prevented them falling behind. M’Baky rushed out in an attempt to clear, leaving his goal exposed for Chelmsford skipper Rainford to get on the end of a forward pass and head into the net. However, the opener was ruled out for offside.
After the break it was a whole different story. Nine minutes beyond the interval, Cook was involved in the build-up for his own goal as a cross from the right saw the home custodian make an attempt to save but the ball dropped to the City winger. He was one of a posse of Clarets waiting for it to drop and this time the offside flag didn’t fail them as Cook tapped into the net from close range.
Around the hour mark Chelmsford then began to settle, having gained themselves a tangible advantage, and the introduction of Modeste from the bench almost reaped instant rewards as he screamed an effort narrowly over the crossbar. Nevertheless, it was second time lucky for the youngster in the 72nd minute as a final procession began when he challenged M’Baky for the ball which ran loose for him to finish with ease.
Just five minutes later the tie was put fully beyond Enfield as another youthful substitute, Edmans, made his initial impact by dribbling adjacent with the goal line before cutting the ball back where Rainford arrived to make no mistake. This was quickly followed by an 85th-minute strike for Edmans himself, the enormous striker cracking into the top corner from around the area of the penalty spot to make it four.
A minute before the end, Cook completed his brace as he crashed the ball home from 15 yards, again high into the net, following a tidy overlapping run and cross from Modeste, meaning Glenn was rewarded with a comfortable victory. He concluded: “It was great to see the goals spread out as last year we relied a bit too much on Dave Rainford. We’ve already had a fantastic return from Cooky, Danny Hockton and Rob Edmans and Dave has just started to find his shooting boots too. Now it’s time to take the confidence boost this game has given us back into our league matches.”
