Oxford United came back from their midweek defeat against Mansfield Town to beat Gateshead at the International Stadium to remain clear at the top of the Blue Square Premier table on Saturday.
Despite the visitors dominating the first half, it was the home side who went closest through Steven Richardson and Wayne Phillips. But the U`s eventually took the lead just past the hour-mark through Matthew Green from close range.
The home side pushed hard for an equaliser but Oxford held on to extend their lead at the top of the table to eight points.
Kevin Gallen scored twice as ten-man Luton Town came from 2-0 down to win a seven-goal thriller at the Abbey Stadium against Cambridge United.
The Hatters already trailed to Courtney Pitt's effort on 20 minutes and a Chris Holroyd penalty after 33 minutes when Liam Hatch was sent-off for a foul on Paul Carden.
But Gallen pulled one back from close range 3 minutes after the break and Rossi Jarvis equalised on the hour-mark before Jake Howells fired the visitors ahead less than a minute later.
Holroyd pulled the U's level 4 minutes after that but Gallen won it from the spot 15 minutes from time.
Kettering Town claimed a second successive home win as they eventually cruised against struggling Ebbsfleet United.
Goals from Moses Ashikodi, Francis Green and an own-goal sealed the win at the Elgood's Arena.
The Poppies almost had the worst possible start as Louis Cumbers somehow blazed over the bar from seven yards after good work by Ricky Shakes.
The hosts finally got into their stride and Ashikodi missed the ball completely from Danny Thomas' pull-back. Had he controlled it the goal would have been at his mercy.
Green forced Lance Cronin into a decent save after a good move but the goal finally came on 34 minutes when Ashikodi made amends by blasting home after some fine work down the left by Greg Taylor.
Mustapha Carayol saw a great strike hit the inside of the post and come out before Ashikodi forced Cronin into a good block.
Ebbsfleet piled on the pressure as the Poppies dropped deep but the hosts hit the ultimate sucker-punch 13 minutes from the end when Green showed wonderful control to turn two defenders and fire home.
That knocked the stuffing out of the visitors and the Poppies rubbed salt into the wound when substitute Jean-Paul Marna got away down the right and pulled the ball back with the unfortunate Leon Crooks bundling the ball into his own net.
Stevenage Borough slipped to third when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Altrincham at Broadhall Way.

Tamworth lost ground on the front-runners as they played out to a 1-1 draw with Eastbourne Borough at Priory Lane.
Liam Enver-Marum gave the Sports the lead in the 55th minute, but just 4 minutes later Jake Sheridan equalised for the Lambs, and although both sides had the chance to grab a winner, a draw was probably a fair result on the day.
Luke Moore scored twice as AFC Wimbledon ended a run of four successive draws with a 4-0 win over Histon at Kingsmeadow.
Moore fired the Dons in front from close range with a neat left-foot finish past keeper Danny Naisbitt.
Midfielder Lewis Taylor doubled their lead before Moore made it three from Sam Hatton's pass.
Danny Kedwell completed the scoring from the penalty spot after a foul on Hatton.
Rushden & Diamonds slumped to their first defeat this month, despite taking an early lead at the Broadfield Stadium against Crawley Town.

Diamonds went ahead on 9 minutes when Craig Farrell headed home Curtis Osano's cross.
Cliff Akurang almost doubled the advantage but Crawley levelled on 26 minutes as Osano was beaten in the air by Jefferson Louis, who nodded over Abbey into the net.
Diamonds skipper Stuart was at fault for Crawley's second goal as Willock held him off before lobbing Abbey.
Crawley centre half Karl Broadhurst was sent-off at the end of 6 minutes of stoppage-time for tripping Matt Pattison on the edge of the box.
Rob Duffy grabbed a hat trick as Mansfield Town beat Hayes & Yeading United 3-1 at Field Mill.
The Stags dominated the first half and Duffy opened the scoring after 37 minutes after visiting keeper Simon Overland had spilled Louis Briscoe's harmless cross.
The home side doubled their lead 4 minutes after the break when Duffy scored from the spot after Adam Green had brought down Jake Speight.
Sean Canham pulled a goal back with a penalty of his own on the hour-mark, but a second Duffy spot-kick wrapped up the points 2 minutes later.
York City extended their unbeaten home run to seven games by beating ten-man Kidderminster Harriers 3-2 at the Kitkat Crescent.

Matt Barnes-Homer netted a consolation for Harriers, scoring from 30 yards on 62 minutes.

The home side took the lead after 13 minutes when Matty Tubbs latched on to a Daniel Webb header to slot home.
Chris Flood doubled the advantage just before half time when he placed a shot past the visiting keeper Tim Deasy.
Barrow struggled to create any chances of their own and 15 minutes from time Flood set up Tubbs who sealed the win when he fired home from inside the penalty area.
Sean Rigg and Mark Preece were on target as Forest Green Rovers edged out fellow strugglers Grays Athletic 2-1 to secure their first win of the season.
