Charlton Joins Steelmen
26 May 2010 10:13:00

Corby Town have signed experienced defender Asa Charlton from Blue Square Bet North rivals Redditch United.

The 32-year-old is a direct replacement for Paul Mayo, who left the Steelmen to join another league rival, Gainsborough Trinity, last week.

Charlton (pictured) started out with Kidderminster Harriers and then went to Telford United before a spell in America.

He initially joined Redditch in 2004 before earning a brief shot at the Football League with Mansfield Town in 2006.

However, he made only four League appearances for the Stags before he returned to Telford and then Redditch again last season.

Charlton captained the Reds in the last campaign in which they struggled and only just avoided relegation.

But Corby boss Graham Drury does not believe his new player will have been personally affected by that. “I`m not worried that Asa will have had any loss of form and confidence,” Drury said. “In fact I know he hasn`t because he`s a very confident and positive person.

“I`m sure he will be a great addition to the squad and I`m chuffed to get him to Corby.”

One player who looks unlikely to be with Corby next season, however, is combative midfielder Leon Hibbert.

Already being monitored by Coca-Cola League Two side Lincoln City, Hibbert is now also rumoured to be on the radar of Gainsborough boss Brian Little and might be about to follow Mayo to the Northolme.
