Oxford United are four points behind leaders Stevenage Borough after the U`s were held to a goalless draw by Tamworth at The Lamb in the Blue Square Premier on Sunday.
The home side had a chance after just 16 seconds but Iyseden Christie could only flash a header wide from twelve yards.
Oxford welcomed back top scorer James Constable, and he came close to his nineteenth of the season as the visitors began to control the game.
Lewis Chalmers and Simon Clist were involved in the build up and when the ball was not cleared Constable unleashed a stinging volley from the edge of the area which was brilliantly saved by Lambs` keeper Danny Alcock.
Strike partner Francis Green then failed to hit the target with a diving header at the near post as Tamworth's goal survived until the break.
Constable hit a long-range shot wide at the start of the second half before Michael Blackwood had a rare sight of goal for the hosts but could not trouble Ryan Clarke in the Oxford goal.
