Two Leave Leaders
05 March 2010 17:24:00

Fleetwood Town have parted company with two players through mutual consent - Ashley Wooliscroft and Gavin Cowan will join different Blue Square North teams.

Right-back Wooliscroft, who joined Town last summer, leaves for Stafford Rangers where he played on loan earlier this season.

Wooliscroft made ten appearances for the Lancashire club, including the first six games of the current campaign.

The defender then lost his shirt to established Town player Shaun Beeley and went on to make his remaining four starts Beeley’s recent injury.

Centre half Cowan (pictured) joins Gainsborough Trinity after joining in January from AFC Telford United but it difficult to break into the first-team.

His single appearance came during Town’s away victory at Corby Town at the start of February.

Manager Micky Mellon says both players wanted regular football and were well regarded at Highbury.

“These two lads really need to be playing first team football regularly and the opportunity came up for them do just that. They go with our best wishes and we may well bump into them in the future.”

Nathan Pond is the only recognised cover for central defenders Michael Taylor and Steve McNulty, but Mellon feels Cowan’s departure will not mean a lack of cover for too long.

“Hopefully that will be redressed in the very near future. We have a few irons in the fire and I’m hoping for something to be finalised towards the middle of next week.”

The departure of Wooliscroft indicates Shaun Beeley is back to fitness for the league leaders.

“Shaun will be available for Saturday. He’s been tested in various training sessions and he’s looking fine. He’s a fit lad. Again, work is going on to supply cover.”

Cowan joins his new side as they travel to second spot Southport this weekend whilst Wooliscroft’s Stafford visit Eastwood Town - Fleetwood go to third-placed Hinckley United.
