Saturday`s Blue Square Premier Review....
06 March 2010 18:34:00

Stevenage Borough returned to the top of the Blue Square Premier table after a 2-0 win against Crawley Town at Broadhall Way on Saturday.

After a first half with few chances, the game was brought to life just 2 minutes into the second half as Michael Bostwick broke the deadlock with a stunning goal from 30 yards.

The midfielder picked the ball up on the left wing following a half cleared corner from Stacy Long and fired a stinging shot into the top corner.

Boro, who have now won five out of their last six games, were then frustrated by a stubborn Crawley side and had to wait until the last kick of the game to secure all three points when Lee Boylan met a left wing cross from Chris Beardsley to coolly finish from close range.

Max Porter grabbed a late winner for Rushden & Diamonds as they secured a vital victory at The Lamb against Tamworth.

The midfielder struck 7 minutes from time with a 20-yard shot to hand Justin Edinburgh's side another crucial victory in their hunt for a play-off place.

It was a scrappy game at The Lamb but the Diamonds produced another battling display to seal their second successive away win.

Goals from Danny Powell and Ollie Thorne handed struggling Forest Green Rovers a much-needed win over play-off chasing York City at the New Lawn.

Rovers took the lead in the 22nd minute when a miss-hit cross from Powell dipped over away keeper Michael Ingham.

The visitors levelled on 34 minutes when Levi Mackin's strike hit the back of Forest Green defender David Brown and sent keeper Danny Irish the wrong way.

But a contentious second half free kick on 55 minutes, won and taken by Brown, was headed in by Thorne to secure the points for Rovers.

Kettering Town finally ended their home hoodoo with a comfortable win over struggling Grays Athletic.

Ian Roper gave the Poppies the lead and James Jennings grabbed his first goal for the club to ensure the points were safe by half time.

It was Kettering's first win at the Elgood's Brewery Arena since September 26th.

The Poppies got the perfect start after just 10 minutes when John Dempster headed Jennings'free kick onto the bar. It fell perfectly for Roper who calmly side-footed home his second goal of the season.

From there it was all Kettering. Kwesi Appiah had an effort ruled out for offside, Jordan Hadfield shot wide and Appiah fired straight at Glyn Garner's legs after being sent through on goal.

But the second goal did arrive 6 minutes before the break when Jennings rose to head in at the far post after Dempster had retrieved possession.

Grays missed a great chance to get back into the game just after half time when Alex Rhodes headed wide after good work from former Poppies winger Richard Graham.

Greg Taylor sent a volley over the bar at the other end but the game fizzled out after that as the Poppies chose to hold on to what they had.

Jean-Paul Marna fired just wide at the death but there were no other chances as Kettering sealed a much-needed home win.

Luton Town ended a run of four games without a win with a 3-2 triumph over Hayes & Yeading United at Church Road.

The visitors had only scored two goals in their mini-slump though they took the lead in the game's first meaningful attack when Liam Hatch nodded in Keith Keane's cross in the 23rd minute.

Hayes nearly drew level through Dale Binns almost immediately before Luton doubled their lead after half-an-hour when Adam Green fouled Claude Gnakpa in the area and the Frenchmen made no mistake with his spot-kick.

Garry Haylock's men narrowed the deficit when Justin Cochrane's 30-yard effort found the top corner in the 55th minute.

However, Tom Craddock restored the Hatters' two-goal cushion with a low effort from the edge of the area in the 74th minute before Tom Cadmore grabbed a consolation with a close-range header 2 minutes from time.

Mansfield Town ended Salisbury City`s six-game unbeaten run and kept themselves very much in the play-off picture with a 4-2 win at Field Mill.

Jon Challinor opened the scoring for the home side after 30 minutes, firing home from 18 yards after the midfielder was played in by Louis Briscoe.

Briscoe was again on hand 6 minutes later to set up the Stags' second as he swung in a dangerous cross for striker Jon Shaw to head home from close range.

But Salisbury reduced the arrears almost immediately as the home defence switched off and left Reece Connolly unmarked in the area and the striker placed his shot passed the dive of Alan Marriot into the far corner.

Mansfield were frustrated in the second period and had to wait until 15 minutes from time before extending their lead.

A Gary Mills' cross found substitute Kyle Perry free in the area and the striker finished clinically from 12 yards.

The visitors grabbed a last-gasp consolation through Ben Adelsbury whose 20-yard right-footed effort flew into the net. But there was still time for Mansfield to score a fourth as Rob Duffy completed the scoring with a close-range finish after being put through by Briscoe to make it four games without defeat for the home side.

Altrincham turned in a resolute display to secure a valuable point away at Kingsmeadow against play-off chasing AFC Wimbledon.

The visitors edged a dour first half, Chris Denham going close with a 30-yard drive and Dons` keeper James Pullen saving a Nicky Clee shot.

Alty took the lead 6 minutes into the second period when Derek Duncan fouled Denham in the area, and Chris Senior scored the resulting penalty.

But the hosts drew level 14 minutes from time when Ben Judge headed in from close range.

Eastbourne Borough picked up a vital point in their battle against relegation after holding Kidderminster Harriers to a goalless draw at Priory Lane.

Matt Crabb hit the woodwork twice while Ben Austin also cleared off the line from Brian Smikle in a scrappy encounter.

Boro will be happy with the result following their 6-0 hammering by Stevenage Borough in midweek and considering Harriers are unbeaten in eight games.

Liam Enver-Marum was denied by Ross Atkins after just 5 minutes as Boro started brightly but Harriers got on top and should have taken the lead when Smikle's shot was cleared off the line by Austin.

Adam Boyesd hit the bar from 20 yards early in the second half and then Matt Crabb fired against a post from close range before curling a free kick against the bar.

McPhee was the next to be denied by the woodwork as his screamer from 25 yards came back off the bar in injury-time.

Moses Ashikodi grabbed a second half equaliser as Ebbsfleet United made Wrexham pay for a missing a host of decent chances at the Racecourse Ground.

Andy Mangan gave the home side the lead after 15 minutes when he fired home after racing onto Christian Smith's pass.

Smith, Silvio Spann, Ashley Westwood and Mike Williams all wasted good opportunities to extend that lead.

And Ashikodi drew the visitors level against the run of play after 69 minutes, shooting home after being teed up by Rory Ginty.

Cambridge United boosted their chances of survival by seeing off ten-man Barrow 1-0 at Holker Street.

These two sides are struggling at the wrong end of the table and their relegation-induced nerves got the better of them as the opening descended into a scruffy affair.

It was hardly surprising when a set-piece brought about the first chance of the match, Josh Coulson heading over the bar for Cambridge from Simon Russell's cross.

Barrow were denied a chance when Brian Saah handled with the home side in a promising position, earning the defender a caution as Jason Walker headed over from the resultant free kick.

But as the game threatened to peter out into a draw, new signing Scott Neilson found the net from close range on 73 minutes to snatch all three points for United.

And the hosts` misery was complete when Carlos Logan saw red late in the day after picking up his second yellow card.

Gateshead moved out of the relegation zone by claiming a point in a goalless draw with Histon at the Glassworld Stadium.

In an end-to-end first half, both teams had chances to break the deadlock though it was Gateshead's Chris Swailes who had the best opportunity when his close-range header sailed over after 29 minutes.

The hosts had suffered three successive losses, although they nearly opened the scoring on the stroke of half time, but Charlie Sheringham's shot from 12 yards missed the target.

Ian Bogie's men were positive in the opening stages of the second half but Peter Winn spurned a couple of chances and Phil Turnbull's 25-yard effort came back off the post.

Andy Ferrell's two long-range efforts and another Swailes' header missed the target as the Tynesiders could not break down the Histon defence and the spoils were shared.
