16 October 2009 09:33:00

Gateshead have signed much-travelled Mansfield Town striker Daryl Clare on an emergency loan and the 31-year-old goes straight into the squad for Saturday's home game with Chester City.

The former Republic of Ireland `B` international has twice won the Conference Premier `golden boot` and has been a prolific goalscorer throughout his career.

After seventy-nine appearances for Grimsby Town, he had a productive season at Boston United where he scored twenty-five goals in forty-seven games.

His strike rate was even better during two seasons at Chester City where he plundered a remarkable forty-eight goals in sixty-two appearances.

Clare returned to Boston United for the 2004/05 campaign before he became Crawley Town's record signing and scored a goal every other game.

After another spell at Boston and one at Crawley Town two years at Burton Albion followed where Clare hitting an impressive thirty-seven goals in eighty-eight games before he moved on to Rushden & Diamonds and then Mansfield.

The 5' 9" front man has been limited to four starts and five substitute appearances since joining the Stags during the close season.

"Clare is a proven striker at Conference level and his goalscoring exploits are second to none," said Gateshead manager Ian Bogie.

"We needed to add some firepower to the attack and hopefully Clare will provide this, and that the loan deal is beneficial to both parties."
