City Sign Birley
19 September 2009 10:16:00

Blue Square South club Worcester City manager Richard Dryden's search for new players to strengthen his squad has met with success.

Dryden has snapped up Matt Birley after his departure this week from UniBond League Premier Division club King's Lynn after seven games for the Norfolk outfit.

Birley was one of three former Tamworth players who joined the Linnets during the close season.

The 23-year-old Bromsgrove-born midfielder started his career with Birmingham City where he came through the Academy before signing as a professional in 2005 and being a regular in the reserves.

He made his first-team debut as a substitute in a Premier League game away to Chelsea on 31st December 2005. He had a short spell on loan to Lincoln City, where he played in four matches, towards the end of 2006.

After being released by the Blues, along with City 'keeper Jake Meredith, at the end of the 2006/07 season he joined Bromsgrove Rovers where he scored five goals in thirty appearances the following season. He was a target for Richard Dryden during the close season but he chose to stay at Rovers for 2008/09 where he scored once in seven games before signing for Tamworth in October 2008.

He again turned down an offer from City during the summer before joining the Linnets so it's a case of third time lucky for Dryden.

Birley goes straight into the squad for Saturday`s match at home to Thurrock.
