Barrow and Stevenage Finish Off the Job
20 March 2010 18:39:00

It will be Barrow v Stevenage Borough in the Final of the FA Carlsberg Trophy at Wembley.

Barrow reached the Final for the first time since winning the competition in 1990, with a hard fought victory over the two legs against Blue Square Premier rivals Salisbury City.

Barrow were good value for Saturday`s second leg win in front of an impressive 3,070 crowd at Holker Street, which gave the Cumbrian side a 3-1 aggregate victory in the tie.

Jason Walker put the home side ahead from the penalty spot 5 minutes after half time before Darell Clarke’s equaliser ensured a nervy end to the game for the Bluebirds.

However, Salisbury were unable to find another goal that would have taken the tie to extra-time and Walker added his second of the afternoon in the closing stages.

The aggregate victory capped a superb season in the cups for Barrow, who also reached the Third Round Proper of the FA Cup earlier this year before losing to Premier League Sunderland.

On Saturday, after a nervous start, Barrow increased in confidence as the match progressed with centre half Paul Jones heading the best opportunity of the first-half wide of the Salisbury goal.

Barrow continued to attack after the break and the game’s decisive moment came 5 minutes into the second half when striker Walker was held back in the Salisbury area.

The referee pointed to the spot and Walker stepped up to cooly despatch the ball beyond the City keeper and put his side within touching distance of Wembley.

With a two-goal cushion, the home fans were looking forward to a nerve-free end to the tie but those thoughts were brought to an abrupt end when Salisbury equalised just 4 minutes later.

Goalkeeper Tim Deasy flapped at a deep, searching cross and Whites` captain Clarke was on hand to head his side a lifeline with 35 minutes left to play.

Salisbury poured forward in search of an equaliser but were unable to find a way through a stubborn Barrow defence and, with a minute left to play, Walker secured his side’s trip to Wembley with a calm finish after good work from Carlos Logan.

Stevenage Borough reached the Final for the third time in four years, after a comfortable aggregate victory over Blue Square Premier rivals Kidderminster Harriers.

A goalless second leg at Broadhall Way was a somewhat low key affair after Boro had romped to a 5-1 victory at Aggborough in the first leg last weekend.

Graham Westley’s men, who also sit top of the table, have dispatched Ebbsfleet United, Vauxhall Motors, Dover Athletic and Workington, in addition to Semi Final opponents Kidderminster, on the road to Wembley - scoring a remarkable nineteen goals along the way.

In the first leg, two goals apiece for Dave Bridges and Chris Beardsley, plus a Yemi Odubade strike, had seen Stevenage to an easy victory. And although they faced a Kidderminster side keen to make amends for that defeat, their progress to the Final was always unlikely to be disrupted.

The hosts started the match brightly and almost took an early lead when Beardsley’s low cross caused mayhem in the Kidderminster area.

However, it was the visitors - playing with an adventurous four-man frontline - who had the better chances in an entertaining first half.

The tie was more subdued after the restart and, despite chances for Odubade and Mitchell Cole, Stevenage were unable to find a way through against a Kidderminster side who regained their pride after a below par first leg performance.

Stevenage Borough will now meet Barrow in the Wembley Final on Saturday, 8th May.
