Saturday`s Blue Square North Review...
20 March 2010 18:54:00

The top two in Blue Square North march on with Fleetwood Town and Southport comfortably ahead of the pack.

However, their private battle for the championship took a slide towards Fleetwood after they won at bottom-markers Harrogate Town, while `Port could only manage a draw at home to play-off chasers Droylsden.

Harrogate are now six points adrift of second-bottom Vauxhall Motors after Gareth Seddon`s 70th minute effort proved enough for Fleetwood at Wetherby Road.

Southport, meanwhile, were involved in a real ding-dong battle at Haig Avenue against the Bloods.

An Earl Davis own goal gave the visitors an early 4th minute lead that Chris Simm cancelled out after 18 minutes.

Matty McGinn then gave Port the lead from the penalty spot after 28 minutes. However, goals from Rob Lloyd on 63 minutes and Karl Brown on 76 gave the Bloods a 3-2 lead that McGinn salvaged into a point for the home side with another spot-kick a minute from time.

That point kept Dave Pace`s side in the top five, with Alfreton Town and Hinckley United ahead of them.

The Reds beat Blyth Spartans 1-0 at the Impact Arena, courtesy of Liam Hearn`s 29th minute effort, while the Knitters beat relegation-threatened Gloucester City by the same scoreline at the Marston`s Stadium, thanks to Alex Taylor`s early 4th minute goal.

Droylsden`s Tameside neighbours Stalybridge Celtic are level on points with them and AFC Telford United after beating the latter 1-o at the New Bucks Head – the unfortunate Kevin O`Connor netting the only goal of the game in the wrong end after 21 minutes.

Eastwood Town slipped up in their quest for a top five spot, going down 2-1 at Coronation Park to Workington, whose Ryan Bowman and Gareth Arnison turned the game in their favour in the final 9 minutes after Ryan Whitehurst had given the Badgers a 23rd minute lead.

Ilkeston Town and Corby Town remain on the fringe and both won on Saturday. Ilkeston won 1-0 at Marston Road against Stafford Rangers – Jimmy Ghaichem scoring the only goal 5 minutes before half time, and the Steelmen beat Hyde United 2-0 at the Rockingham Triangle with a Leon Mettam brace – the first from the spot after less than 5 minutes and the second 6 minutes from the end.

Gainsborough Trinity earned a good 3-0 Northolme win over Redditch United, with Luke Beckett opening the scoring after 20 minutes and adding the third on 33 after Lewis McMahon had sandwiched the second from the spot 4 minutes after the opener.

Solihull Moors and Northwich Victoria shared a 1-1 Damson Park draw where Mark Danks gave the Vics a 58th minute lead from the spot and Jake Edwards equalised with 20 minutes remaining.
