Reds Back in Play-Off Race
03 February 2010 12:37:00

Alfreton Town climbed back into the Blue Square North play-off places after last Saturday’s 2-1 victory in deepest Gloucestershire.

Nicky Law’s side have played more games than the majority of the chasing pack but the statistics are solidly confirming the Reds’ chances.

With twenty-five games played, Alfreton are just one point behind last season’s total of forty-one at the same stage of events.

However, the Reds are up on wins with 11 compared to ten last season and have scored forty-seven compared to forty-six in 2008/09 and conceded two goals fewer, thirty-two compared with thirty-four last January.

Last season’s run had already begun with a 5-0 demolition of Hucknall Town at the Impact Arena on Boxing Day after which Law’s side went on to lose just two games in the last twenty-three league outings.

This season, Alfreton are currently on a five-game unbeaten run in Blue Square North, and have seventeen games left, so the comparisons are there to be drawn.

This Saturday, Alfreton will be looking to extend that run when they host second-from-bottom Harrogate Town at the Impact Arena.

The Reds have already won 4-0 in North Yorkshire in mid-October and would appear to have a great chance of recording a second league double of the season.

In the same fixture last season, Alfreton recorded a 4-1 home win but Law will no doubt accept three points from a lesser scoreline as his side look to recapture the free-flowing form of a year ago which took them all the way to the play-off semi finals.

After three succcessive draws, Alfreton rediscovered their character as they hit back from going a goal down to record a 2-1 win from their first ever game against Gloucester City last Saturday.

There is most certainly everything to play for and with plenty of competition for places throughout the squad, Law will be looking for his side to kick on and make the most of another very good opportunity to progress.
