Saturday`s Blue Square Premier Review...
14 November 2009 18:49:00

Blue Square Premier leaders Oxford United suffered a 3-1 defeat at Aggborough against Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday, and with Stevenage Borough winning, the gap at the top is now down to five points.

A brace from striker Robbie Matthews gave Harriers their shock win, firing home from the edge of the box after just 2 minutes and sealing victory 7 minutes into the second half with the third after Matthew Barnes-Homer had fired in from 25 yards in the 18th minute.

James Constable had given Oxford hope from the spot on the half-hour mark but Matthews also had a penalty saved by Ryan Clarke after Steven Kinniburgh was sent-off 13 minutes from time.

Charlie Griffin atoned for an own goal by scoring a hat trick to help Stevenage defeat Gateshead at Broadhall Way.

Griffin headed into his own net from a free kick to give the Tynesiders the lead after 38 minutes but levelled 2 minutes later and then Yemi Odabade and Griffin put Boro 3-1 ahead with two goals just before the break.

On-loan Daryl Clare netted for Gateshead to make it 3-2 on 69 minutes, but Griffin's free kick restored Boro's two-goal lead 4 minutes later.

Clare netted from close range 9 minuteds from the end, but Michael Bostwick's long-range strike sealed the win for Stevenage in stoppage time.

Mark Cooper's reign as manager of Kettering Town ended in triumph as they claimed another fine win on the road at the Abbey Stadium against Cambridge United.

An early Wayne Hatswell own-goal and a late, late effort from Anthony Elding completed the win and sent Cooper off to take charge of Peterborough United in style.

The Poppies boss handed James Dance, who signed after performing so well against Kettering for Redditch United in the FA Cup, his full debut.

And Cooper couldn't have asked for a better start as his side went in front inside the first 2 minutes.

And it couldn't have been simpler as former Rushden & Diamonds defender Wayne Hatswell flicked Exodus Geohaghon's long throw into the top corner of his own net.

Cambridge responded with plenty of possession but, in general, they were restricted to mainly long-range efforts with the best being a Robbie Willmott free kick that fizzed just over the bar.

Cambridge came out the stronger after the break and Lee Harper was forced into his first real save when he pushed away Willmott's near-post strike.

But Kettering, who were backed by a healthy following of fans, were typically resolute as they have always been under Cooper and the hosts didn't look like finding a breakthrough.

They piled on the pressure late on and Harper was forced to pull of a brilliant reflex save to deny Danny Crow.

But then the Poppies broke and Damian Spencer found Elding who coolly slotted past Potter to send Cooper off in style.

Crawley Town went down to a 2-0 defeat to play-off chasing Mansfield Town, who were comfortable winners, despite playing for the last 20 minutes with ten-men.

The Stags went ahead after 11 minutes when Jake Speight scored from close range after Ben Smith could only clear a shot from Scott Garner into his path.

Danny Forrest and Chris Giles went close either side of half-time but Reds lacked a cutting edge in the final third against a well-organised home side.

Nick Jordan, deputising for Simon Rayner in the second half after the keeper had fallen awkwardly, made good saves from Blair Sturrock and Kyle Perry but Mansfield were down to ten-men when Matt Somner was sent-off for two fouls in the space of 4 minutes.

But it made little difference and Paul Heckingbottom doubled Stags' lead with 14 minutes remaining when his free kick into the bottom corner gave Jordan no chance.

Striker Kevin Gallen scored his third goal in a week to help Luton Town to a comfortable win against Grays Athletic at the New Recreation Ground.

The visitors took the lead after 39 minutes when Gallen teed up Tom Craddock who finished from close range.

Gallen then turned goalscorer 5 minutes after the break when midfielder Kevin Nicholls set him up to finish from just inside the area.

Grays struggled to create any real chances in the game and the Hatters looked the more likely to score again when Gallen fired just wide.

Mark Rankine scored the only goal of the game for York City at the KitKat Crescent as the pressure increased on Ebbsfleet United manager Liam Daish.

York started the stronger of the sides and were denied several times by Fleet keeper Lance Cronin.

The home side finally went ahead just before half time when Alex Lawless set up Rankine who fired home.

York continued to control the game and the visitors could not find a way through, condemning them to their twelfth league game in a row without a win.

Substitute Cliff Akurang scored twice against his former club as Rushden & Diamonds celebrated their sixth successive win at Nene Park against Histon.

Loan signing Jefferson Louis' debut lasted just 17 minutes due to injury and his replacement Akurang pounced with a tap-in after Lee Tomlin challenged keeper Danny Naisbitt.

Early in the second half Naisbitt produced saves to deny Akurang and Tomlin while Paul Terry also came close.

Diamonds doubled their lead on 64 minutes. Tomlin's corner was punched out to Mark Byrne whose shot was deflected to Jamie Stuart and the skipper squared for Akurang to slot home.

Former Nene Park trainee Andrew Tidswell headed into the far corner to pull one back with Histon's only attempt on target.

AFC Wimbledon staged a fine comeback to salvage a point from a thrilling game at Holker Street against Barrow.

Paul Lorraine put through his own net to gift the home side the lead in the 32nd minute.

And Jason Walker doubled Barrow's lead 3 minutes after the break when he volleyed home Craig Nelthorpe's corner after the break.

But Elliott Godfrey capitalised on a fumble by Stuart Tomlinson to make it 2-1 on 63 minutes and Jon Main converted Sam Hatton's corner to earn a point on 76 minutes.

Altringham could only manage a 2-2 at Moss Lane against lowly Forest Green Rovers.

Goals from Robbie Williams and Chris Senior put the home side two up after just 22 minutes but Jonathan Smith reduced the deficit on the half-hour mark.

Sean Rigg snatched a late point for Rovers with less than 4 minutes remaining.

Tamworth ended a run of six straight defeats in league and cup with victory over bottom-markers Chester City.

Neil Mackenzie fired the Lambs in front after 10 minutes but on-loan striker Mark Beesley pulled Chester level with a cool finish on 57 minutes.

Gregg Blundell and Shaun Kelly then both wasted chances for the visitors. And they were punished when on-loan debutant Simon Brown put the hosts back in front from close range 12 minutes later before Nick Wright netted with a fierce left-foot drive with 14 minutes remaining.

Wrexham's four-match unbeaten league run came to a very disappointing end on Saturday at home to Hayes & Yeading United while manager Dean Saunders was away on Wales duty.

Toby Little put the visitors ahead after 9 minutes, sliding home Esmond James' cross at the far post.

And Little grabbed his second only 2 minutes later, bundling the ball home after Wrexham failed to clear.

The home side were reduced to ten-men in the 52nd minute when Lamine Sakho received a straight red card for a headbutt on James.

Eastbourne Borough's winless streak continued as they lost in cruel fashion at home to Salisbury City.

The game was goalless deep into injury-time when Neil Jenkins was sent-off in controversial fashion for a challenge on Matt Tubbs.

From the resulting free kick, Lee Brown whipped the ball into the six-yard box and substitute Chris Flood planted a header past Danny Knowles.

It means Boro have taken just two points from their last seven games but they can feel hard done by not to get anything after a battling display.

The conditions made the match something of a lottery but Boro defended superbly to limit Salisbury to only a handful of chances in the first half as they played into a gale force wind.

Tubbs came closest to breaking the deadlock when he rattled the crossbar from a 45-yard free kick 4 minutes before the break while Knowles did well to keep out a low shot from Darrell Clarke.

Loan signing Joe Benjamin had Boro's best chance before the break when he shot just over after a surging run from Ben Austin.

Boro had the wind at their backs in the second half but were unable to make the most of it.

Ollie Rowe, making an impressive debut, hit the post with a long ball that caught the wind while a corner from Jenkins curled just wide of the upright.
