Saturday`s FA Cup (Sponsored by e-on) First Round Review...
07 November 2009 19:06:00

There were some excellent results for non-League sides in Saturday`s FA Cup First Round – none more so than the two away wins for Blue Square South outfits Bath City and Staines Town.

Bath deservedly beat Coca-Cola League Two strugglers Grimsby Town at Blundell Park.

Chris Holland opened the scoring after 32 minutes and Darren Edwards seized on a loose ball in the box and saw his shot deflected past Colgan for the second on 52 minutes.

Staines pulled off their biggest Cup win in their history as an Ali Chaaban goal after 21 minutes gave them victory at League Two Shrewsbury Town – themselves famed cup fighters.

Blue Square Premier high-flyers Kettering Town produced a magnificent defensive performance to see off League One side Hartlepool United on their own turf.

Moses Ashikodi was the hero as his 15th minute goal separated the sides.

But the Poppies were grateful to several fine saves by keeper Lee Harper and some excellent defensive work from the likes of Exodus Geohaghon.

Another Blue Square Premier side to see off League One opposition were leaders Oxford United, who beat Yeovil Town 1-0 at the Kassam Stadium.

Jack Midson's strike gave Oxford victory with the only goal 10 minutes into the second half, lobbing Glovers` keeper Richard Martin from just inside the box.

Blue Square Premier York City beat managerless League Two visitors Crewe Alexandra with two goals in the last 5 minutes.

Joe Grant put Crewe ahead after 33 minutes but York levelled 6 minutes later through Richard Brodie.

Calvin Zola's header put Crewe back in front 2 minutes afterwards, but Richard Pacquette's effort made it 2-2 with less than 5 minutes to go, and Brodie's strike from the edge of the area 2 minutes later won it for the Minstermen.

Two other Blue Square Premier sides earned replays, with Stevenage Borough fancying their chances of causing an uspet after holding Port Vale at Vale Park.

Charlie Griffin earned Boro a second bite at the cherry as his injury-time goal secured the draw after the League Two side had led from the 42nd minute when Adam Yates had put them ahead from fully 30-yards.

Luton Town, however, will be unhappy to have thrown away a three-goal lead as League Two high-flyers Rochdale salvaged a replay.

The Hatters went ahead after 4 minutes through Steve Basham and Adam Newton's lob doubled the lead on 21 minutes before Basham hit his second after 29 minutes from the edge of the area.

But Craig Dawson pulled one back after 58 minutes and then Joe Thompson smashed home the second with 3 minutes left and then equalised 2 minutes later to keep his side alive.

On-loan Scunthorpe winger Peter Winn scored in the 3rd minute of injury-time to earn Blue Square Premier side Gateshead a replay with Brentford.

Gateshead had gone ahead on 57 minutes when Bees` keeper Lewis Price dropped Winn's corner into his own net.

Carl Cort headed in a Ryan Dickson cross to level just past the hour-mark and Kevin O'Connor put the League One side ahead 20 minutes from time.

But Winn earned the Tynesiders a trip to London with their late leveller.

There are several other non-League sides through, including Blue Square Premier Wrexham, whose Gareth Taylor rescued them from a replay at Ryman League Division One North minnows Lowestoft Town with an 89th minute winner.

Aaron O'Connor struck twice as Blue Square Premier Rushden & Diamonds secured a safe passage into the next round at Nene Park against Blue Square North visitors Hinckley United.

O`Connor opened the scoring on 31 minutes but the Knitters got back on level terms on 64 minutes through Adam Webster, but for only for 2 minutes as O`Connor made it 2-1 and then Mark Byrne sealed the victory 8 minutes from time.

Blue Square Premier triumphed over Blue Square South at Holker Street where Barrow beat Eastleigh 2-1, thanks to a goal 3 minutes into stoppage time.

The Bluebirds looked to be coasting into the Second Round as they led their long-travelling visitors through Andy Cook`s 36th minute effort.

But 5 minutes from time Andy Forbes popped up to level for the Spitfires. Just when a reply looked on, Jason Walker grabbed the winner for the home side in injury-time.

Blue Square Premier side Cambridge United had a much more comfortable passage against Blue Square North visitors Ilkeston Town, running out 4-0 winners at the Abbey Stadium.

Highly-rated striker Chris Holroyd gave the U`s an early 5th minute lead with his fifteenth goal of the season.

Jai Reason doubled the home side's advantage on 64 minutes with a 20-yard drive and Courtney Pitt extended Cambridge's lead with a free kick on 71 minutes and substitute Adam Marriot made it 4-0 on his home debut 4 minutes from time.

Blue Square Premier rivals Forest Green Rovers and Mansfield Town must try again following a 1-1 draw at the New Lawn.

Jared Hodgkiss put the home side in front after 28 minutes, but the Stags eventually earned the right to take them back to Field Mill when Scott Garner equalised with less than 4 minutes remaining.

Non-League sides exiting to League clubs included Salisbury City, who battled strongly before eventually bowing out at League Two Accrington Stanley, whose Jimmy Ryan after 19 minutes and Michael Symes after 33 minutes just proved enough, despite Salisbury pulling a goal back in the 66th minute through Matty Tubbs.

Blue Square North hosts AFC Telford United went down to a 3-1 defeat at the New Bucks Head to League Two Lincoln City, whose Sergio Torres, Jamie Clarke and Aaron Brown were on target after Liam Blakeman had equalised on 49 minutes.

Blue Square South side Bromley were hammered 4-0 at Hayes Lane by League One Colchester United, whose Simon Hackney opened the scoring on 32 minutes.

Three minutes later Kayode Odejayi made it 2-0 and then second half goals from Clive Platt and substitute Steven Gillespie made it a comfortable passage for the U`s.

Luke Gutteridge bagged a brace to see Northampton Town through 2-1 at Sixfields against Blue Square North side Fleetwood Town.

Gutteridge gave the Cobblers a 29th minute lead that Sean Clancy equalised just before half time. But Gutteridge ensured the home side of a place in the draw with a 61st minute winner.

It was a similar scoreline at the County Ground where Swindon edged out famed cup giantkillers now Blue Square South Woking, thanks to a 36th minute Billy Paynter goal.
