Luton Sign Minstermen Winger
22 January 2010 17:02:00

Craig Nelthorpe has joined Luton Town on-loan until the end of the season from Blue Square Premier rivals York City.

The 22-year-old has agreed to join the Hatters after impressing manager Richard Money in the reserves against Peterborough on Wednesday.

Left-winger Nelthorpe began his career at home-town club Doncaster Rovers where he caught the eye of the Hatters` boss while he was managing at Walsall.

During his time at Rovers he found first-team opportunities limited and was sent out on loan over a four-year period to Hucknall Town, Kidderminster Harriers, Gateshead, Halifax Town and Darlington before another spell with Gateshead.

His time at the Keepmoat Stadium came to an end in January last year and joined Oxford United until the end of the 2008/09 campaign before signing for York last summer.

Illness kept Nelthorpe out of Martin Foyle's plans at the beginning of this season, limiting him to seven appearances. He subsequently enjoyed a fruitful spell on-loan at Barrow where he scored twice in six appearances for the Bluebirds.

A deft, tricky winger, with plenty of pace, Money was delighted to secure Nelthorpe's services until the season's end. He told his club`s official website: "We've grateful for York for letting us have a look at him in the reserves on Wednesday and he was desperately keen to come here.

"I've known about him for a while when he was at Doncaster and I was managing Walsall and he was always one I thought 'there might be a player there'.

"York sent out a circular last week notifying clubs of his availability and he came down to play for us on Wednesday and did well.

"The left-side of midfield position is one where we could do with a bit more competition.

"So to have a natural left-footer that can go past people gives us a little something different than what we've got going into the second half of the season."
