Blue Square North club Redditch United have joined the list of clubs to be served with a winding up petition – this time by a former club chairman.
The club – which counts local MP and ex-home secretary Jacqui Smith among its fans – was served with the petition by Neil Pagett, who was chairman at the club in 2002.
The dispute revolves around an outstanding bill understood to be a five-figure sum connected to historic debt taken out by the club several years ago, for which Pagett was a guarantor.
The club said it was currently negotiating with the hope of finding an “amicable solution” to the issue.
The club has been aware of the winding up threat for several weeks – the petition was presented on November 20th last year. The case will be heard at Birmingham District Registry on January 21st.
Winding up orders – where courts can effectively liquidate a company and its assets – are seen as a last resort for creditors who have tried every other method to recoup their debt.
Despite the threat hanging over them, Redditch are optimistic the matter would be settled.
