Following the horrific injury sustained by midfield player Martin Brittain on Saturday, the 24-year-old has undergone surgery at Gateshead's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
The summer signing broke both his tibia and fibia in the 76th minute of the Blue Square Premier game against Hayes & Yeading United at the International Stadium.
After a 40 minute delay the game was finally abandoned with the bottom six game still goalless.
The operation, which included inserting a steel rod to support one of the bones in Brittain's right leg, has been successful and the former Newcastle United player now faces the long haul back to fitness.
Manager Ian Bogie visited Brittain in hospital and said: "He was still groggy after the operation but I assured him the club would be very supportive, and it is important for him to keep his spirits up.
"It is too early to say how long he will be out of the game, or whether he will play again this season, but he will be given every support and we will keep him involved."
Hayes & Yeading boss Garry Haylock, who was furious after the abandonment of Saturday's game on Tyneside, has sent his best wishes to the player.
"I'll be giving Ian Bogie a ring this week to see how the lad is," said Haylock "no-one wants to see a player suffer a bad injury, though I do not believe the game should have been abandoned."
