Tuesday`s Blue Square North Review....
17 February 2010 08:59:00

Fleetwood Town moved six points clear at the top of the Blue Square North table after a last-gasp, hard-fought victory at Coronation Park against play-off chasing Eastwood Town on Tuesday night.

Fleetwood arrived in Nottinghamshire on the back of an eight-game winning sequence but could have been behind as early as the first minute.

Ross Gardner's through ball split the defence but Lindon Meikle's first touch deserted him and Craig Dootson in the Fleetwood goal was able to smother the ball.

Fleetwood could have taken the lead in the 20th minute when Gareth Seddon broke clear but Jan Budtz was out quickly and got a touch on the ball to allow Lawrence Vaughan to clear.

The closest the Badgers came to a goal came after 25 minutes, as Emeka Nwadike delivered a dangerous ball from the wing but Danny Holland poked it wide.

Early in the second half, Jamie McGuire flashed a shot wide but chances were soon at a premium.

In the 65th minute, Seddon flashed a fierce strike wide and Budtz pushed McGuire's shot against the crossbar shortly after.

Sean Clancy was a whisker away from connecting with a low cross but, with the game in the final minute, Clancy cut inside two defenders before striking the ball against an Eastwood player and past a stranded Budtz.

Alfreton Town moved back into a play-off spot by beating Workington 2-0 at the Impact Arena.

Josh Law and Paul Clayton were on target in the 55th and 85th minute respectively for the Reds as they stretched their unbeaten league run to eight games.

Alfreton produced an excellent second half that was almost exclusively one-way traffic, although Workington were not helped by the dismissal of key defender Gary Rowntree.

He was sent off after picking up yellow cards in quick succession – in the 61st and 62nd minutes.

Farsley Celtic broke a run of three straight defeats to earn a 1-0 away victory at Bower Fold against Stalybridge Celtic that may prove critical as they attempt to preserve their status.

Having taken the hit of a ten-point penalty, the Celts have battled well but appeared to have hit a wall with three losses. But they went some way to easing any lingering relegation worries with this victory.

It was a game of few chances and the home side were the better of the two in the goalless first half. Stalybridge’s leading scorer Joe O’Neil was at the sharp end of the half-chances they created.

The visitors came more into the game after the interval. Matty Young went close with a shot the home keeper tipped over but he got the all-important goal in the 55th minute after rounding his marker.

In a crucial `six-pointer` at the bottom of the table, Harrogate Town picked up their first away win of the season, surviving a late scare to hold on for a crucial victory at fellow strugglers Vauxhall Motors.

Harrogate came into the contest on the back of Saturday`s 2-0 victory over Gainsborough Trinity and followed this with a hard fought 2-1 triumph at Rivacre Road.

The visitors went in 2-0 to the good at the break through goals from Peter Knox on the half-hour mark and Simon Yeo just 3 minutes later.

Motors pulled one back on 68 minutes through on-loan Josh Macauley, but the Yorkshire side held off any late resistance.
