Now Peters Joins Trinity
26 January 2010 12:17:00

Blue Square North club Gainsborough Trinity have taken on giant defender Anthony Peters, who was recently released following very brief spells with Mansfield Town and Newport County.

Peters, 26, has been with Chicago Fire and Cleveland City Stars in the MLS - the 6`5” defender joining Cleveland from DC United in July 2009.

Peters originally signed with Cleveland in February but was let out of his contract in order to accept the MLS offer. He also appeared in the US Open Cup match for DC United against FC Dallas and had two stints on loan with the USL- two this season, playing one match with Harrisburg City Islanders and four matches with Richmond Kickers.

A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he played college soccer at the University of Kentucky for two seasons before spending two years playing in Norway and Iceland.

Peters returned to the States in 2007 and finished his final two years of college eligibility at Division II West Virginia Wesleyan where he was the 2008 West Virginia Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Year and an NSCAA First Team All-American.

After a brief trial with Mansfield, Peters signed a pre-contract agreement to join the club permanently when the transfer window re-opened in January.

On December 4, 2009, Peters signed a short term deal with Blue South leaders Newport County, joining the Welsh club for a month prior to signing for Mansfield. This was, however, cancelled due apparently to Peters` wage demands.
