Saturday`s FA Cup (Sponsored by e.on) Fourth Qualifying Round Review (Part One)
24 October 2009 19:20:00

Blue Square Premier leaders Oxford United clinched their place in the FA Cup First Round proper with a 2-0 win over Blue Square South high-flyers Thurrock.

After a frustrating first half, centre back Mark Creighton scored the opener at the Kassam Stadium with a thumping left-footed volley from 16 yards out.

Thurrock's Lee Flynn then deflected Simon Clist's effort past his own keeper to seal the win.

United trio Adam Murray, Jamie Cook and Sam Deering all hit the post.

The game was Deering's first for Oxford since he broke his leg on Boxing Day, current manager Chris Wilder's first game in charge.

Michael Corcoran struck two late goals to send Blue Square Premier Rushden & Diamonds into the next round at Blue Square North Workington`s Borough Park.

Aaron O'Connor put Diamonds ahead on 19 minutes by sweeping home Craig Farrell's shot from Lee Tomlin's corner.

They should have doubled that advantage as O'Connor raced clear and Farrell found Paul Terry who was denied by keeper Tony Caig before firing the rebound wide.

Workington were unable to create any clear-cut chances before the break but they should have levelled around the hour-mark as Gareth Arnison missed the target.

Diamonds wasted an even better chance 3 minutes later when Tomlin blasted high and wide from the penalty spot after Kyle May handled Simon Downer's header.

Victory was finally sealed with 8 minutes left as stand-in skipper Corcoran stabbed in Farrell's free kick.

Corcoran converted a stoppage time spot-kick after a foul on Kurt Robinson.

Moses Ashikodi scored a 96th minute equaliser as Blue Square Premier promotion-chasers Kettering Town earned an undeserved replay with Blue Square North strugglers Redditch United after a 1-1 draw at home.

The Poppies turned in a dreadful display and the visitors looked the hungrier and worked their socks off and looked set for a shock win when James Dance scored before half time.

With John Dempster and Ashikodi left on the bench to nurse injuries, Poppies boss Mark Cooper was forced to shuffle his pack with Jean-Paul Marna and Damian Spencer being paired up in attack.

But that strike forced failed to spark in a dire opening period as the Poppies looked every inch a team that seemed to think they could just turn up and win.

Redditch had all the best chances in the first half and the only thing going for Kettering at half-time was that they were only 1-0 down.

David Bridgwater saw an early free kick tipped over the bar by Lee Harper and Joe Clark send a decent strike just wide.

The Poppies posed no threat in the final third and they paid the price when Dance opened the scoring shortly after blazing over the bar from a good position.

He skipped past James Jennings, Patrick Noubissie and, finally, former Redditch man Exodus Geohaghon before confidently beating Harper.

Francis Green saw a header saved by Daniel Lewis as the Poppies finally registered an attempt on target but Redditch should have made it 2-0 just before the break when Jack Byrne broke into the area but saw his shot well saved by Harper.

The second half didn't get any better, in fact it was even worse and Cooper was sent to the stand after he left his technical area to retrieve the ball for a Redditch free kick as the visitors sought to waste time.

Ashikodi was thrown on as things turned desperate and he scuffed an effort wide as Kettering looked to find a way back.

Marna and Dempster sent late headers wide but, it was Ashikodi who was the hero as he turned and fired into the net in the final seconds to seal a replay.

Stevenage Borough substitute Peter Vicenti broke Chelmsford City hearts with a stoppage time winner against the ten-man Blue Square South side in a pulsating tie at Melbourne Stadium.

The striker had been on the field for a matter of seconds when Yemi Odubade presented him with the simplest of chances to end Chelmsford’s stubborn resistance.

The tie looked to be heading towards a replay after Charlie Griffin looped a 63rd minute header past Chelmsford keeper Ashley Harrison to cancel out Robert Edmans’ first half opener for the hosts.

Vicenti’s winner was the culmination of a period of intense Boro pressure, but was hard on a City side who put in a spirited performance against a visiting team who have lost just once this season.

However, the hosts’ cause was not helped by a 65th minute red card for midfielder Simon Glover, deservedly dismissed for a reckless two-footed challenge on goalscorer Griffin.

It was a sad way to end the day for Chelmsford’s fans, who were celebrating one of the club’s biggest occasions since football finally returned to the town, and a bumper crowd of 1,762 packed in to their new home hoping to see the Clarets reach the First Round Proper of the world’s oldest cup competition.

Blue Square Premier Wrexham progressed with a late win against UniBond Division One North FC Halifax Town at The Shay.

Wes Baynes was the Wrexham hero deep in injury-time as the substitute rifled home a 30-yard screamer.

Nicky Gray almost claimed an immediate equaliser to book the Shaymen a replay, but goalkeeper Chris Maxwell saved well.

Wrexham's Gareth Taylor had hit the bar with a header, but Steve Payne should have scored for Halifax from six yards when Maxwell spilled a corner.

Blue Square Premier high-flyers Mansfield Town brushed aside league rivals Altrincham with a convincing 3-0 victory at Field Mill.

Two Rob Duffy goals and a strike from Kyle Perry earned the Stags a place in the next round at the expense of an Alty side reduced to ten-men.

The hosts were favourites for the tie having defeated the visitors 2-1 in a league fixture just two weeks ago. And despite a subdued opening, Mansfield soon rattled through the gears to dispatch the below-par visitors. Duffy opened the scoring for the Stags after 20 minutes.

The striker, left unmarked at the near post, nodded Perry’s teasing cross home for his tenth goal of an increasingly productive season.

And just 7 minutes Duffy made the most of a goalkeeping error to grab both his and Mansfield’s second goal of the day.

The hosts came out after the half time interval in search of more goals and Perry effectively settled the game in the 62nd minute.

The forward made space on the edge of the 18-yard box before drilling a shot past Stuart Coburn in the Altrincham goal, with the help of a deflection.

The Robins miserable day was completed when midfielder Tom Kearney was shown a straight red card 3 minutes from time for hacking down Gary Mills.

Another Blue Square Premier outfit, York City, were unimpressive in reaching the First Round with a 2-0 victory over Zamaretto League Division One Midlands minnows Bedworth United.

Michael Rankine and Richard Brodie scored for York to take through against the plucky Greenbacks.

Blue Square South side Woking enjoyed a 5-0 win over Ryman League Premier Division Hendon to clinch a place in the next round.

Hendon were taken apart by a Harry Arter hat trick and a brace from Giuseppe Sole.

Chester City old boy Paul Rutherford scored Barrow's equaliser to force a replay at the Deva Stadium.

City looked on course for the next round when defender Johnny Flynn fired home at Holker Street on 16 minutes.

After going close through Simon Spender and Rutherford, Blue Square Premier rivals Barrow finally found a breakthrough through the latter. And they would have won the game if not for a bad, late miss by Jon Shaw.

Chester, ahead when Flynn netted after Barrow made a mess of defending a free-kick, also had their share of decent openings, Mark Beesley and loan man Michael Coulson both wasting chances to carve out a two-goal lead.

Two more Blue Square Premier sides in Crawley Town and AFC Wimbledon are in the hat for Monday`s draw after a 1-1 outcome at the Broadfield Stadium.

Danny Forrest scored for the Reds in the first half before Danny Kedwell struck from 30 yards to bring the Dons back on level terms.

Ryman League Division One North side Lowestoft Town pulled off one of the best results of the day as they scored an injury-time equaliser to force a replay with Blue Square North hosts Gloucester City.

The Tigers looked set to win the tie when Greg Crane scored an own goal in the 73rd minute.

But the Suffolk outfit converted one of a number of chances to equalise when Gary McGee fired home from a Matt Nolan free kick in stoppage time.

AFC Telford United overcame adversity to force areplay with Blue Square North rivals Blyth Spartans.

Traffic congestion meant that the Bucks arrived at Croft Park just 40 minutes before kick-off.

Rob Smith's side then had to tackle more problems when Gavin Hurren was red-carded shortly after half time for an off-the-ball incident.

But a solid defensive display as well as several fine saves from Ryan Young mean they will play again on Tuesday.
