Saturday`s Blue Square South Review....
17 April 2010 17:44:00

Lewes gave themselves a great chance to avoid relegation from Blue Square South after hammering Dorchester Town 5-0 at the Dripping Pan on Saturday and then discovering that fourth-bottom Worcester City had been beaten at Chelmsford City.

Joe Keehan bagged a brace for the Rooks, opening the scoring after 8 minutes and then doubling their lead right on half time.

Robert Gradwell on 52 minutes and Chris Breach 3 minutes later killed the game off as a contest, with Jean-Michel Sigere adding the fifth 5 minutes from time.

Worcester, meanwhile, went down to a 48th minute Warren McBean effort for virtual play-off certainties Chelmsford at Melbourne, and they now trail Lewes only by two points with the Sussex side having a vital game in hand.

Bishop`s Stortford are now safe after earning a point from a 1-1 draw at out-of-form Eastleigh at the Sparshatts Stadium.

Richard Butler looked to have won the points for the Spitfires when his goal 3 minutes before half time kept them in front until 3 minutes from time when Danny Morgan equalised.

Already doomed Weymouth beat Hampton & Richmond Borough 1-0 at the Wessex Stadium, courtesy of Jamie McGuinness` goal 5 mknutes after the break, while Weston-super-Mare, who will accompany the Terras down, failed to win their last home game of the season, going down to a 2-1 defeat to Welling United, whose Lee Clarke scored twice in 4 minutes midway through the second half after Ben Cleverley had given Weston a 56th minute lead.

Dover Athletic will now have to hope Chelmsford drop points to claim the runners-up spot after being beaten 3-0 at champions Newport County.

A crowd of 3,281 came to celebrate and see their Exiles` favourites left the crown, and goals from Kerry Morgan after 3 minutes, Chris Todd on 15 minutes and Danny Rose on 67 sent most of them home happy.

The race for the other two play-off places is still open, with Havant & Waterlooville, Bath City, Woking, Braintree Town and Staines Town all in contention.

Braintree have the edge, possessing seventy-one points after adding three on Saturday, thanks to a 1-0 win at the Camrose against Basingstoke Town with Sean Marks the scorer after 20 minutes.

Bath, however, have two games left to play and trail fifth-placed Woking by one point and the Iron by three.

They won 2-1 at Hayes Lane against Bromley on Saturday, taking an 18th minute lead through Kaid Mohammed and then winning it on 68 minutes with Chris Holland`s second of the game, having inadvertedly given Bromley their leveller on the half-hour mark.

Harry Arter a minute before half time earned Woking three points at Clarence Park against St Albans City, while outsiders Havant won 2-0 at York Road again at Maidenherad United with goals from Steven Walker a minute after half time and Mustafa Tyriaki in stoppage time and Staines, who have two games two play but are three points adrift of Woking, had on-loan John Marquis netting a hat trick in the 5th, 62 and 86th minutes – the last one from the spot - at home to Thurrock.
