The big game of Wednesday night was at Nene Park where a crowd of just under 3,000 saw play-off chasing Rushden & Diamonds tackle title aspirants Oxford United.

And they cancelled each other out for a point apiece on the night.

Diamonds couldn't create clear-cut chances before the break as a series of sloppy passes restricted their normal style.

It was a big battle but plenty of energy in midfield kept Oxford at bay. Even when they broke into the final third, the U's were often caught in the offside trap.

Striker Francis Green recorded the only first half attempt on target with Dale Roberts making a comfortable save.

Michael Corcoran – one of three ex-Oxford players in the Diamonds` line-up – fired over and Paul Terry narrowly failed to connect with Lee Tomlin's free kick.

The deadlock was broken 13 minutes into the second half.

Damian Batt was booked for a trip on Tomlin just outside the penalty box and Craig Farrell's set-piece flew into the far corner via a deflection off Rhys Day.

Four minutes after coming on as a substitute, Sam Deering capitalised on a defensive lapse to knock the ball into an empty net – much to the delight of Oxford's supporters behind that goal.

Farrell nodded wide when the game finally opened up between two evenly-matched sides.

But goalscoring opportunities remained at a premium as Mark Byrne and Batt both failed to hit the target from long range.

The final stages didn't produce any further chances with Diamonds and Oxford reasonably pleased to pick up a bonus point.

Danny Crow's second half brace helped Cambridge United make it nine games without defeat as they overcame Tamworth 2-0 at the Abbey Stadium.

The former Peterborough United striker struck in the 51st and 68th minutes to kill off the Lambs` challenge.

Cambridge started brightly and Brian Saah saw a shot blocked by Aaron Mitchell, while at the other end Mitchell went close with a low strike that was hacked clear.

Brad Pritchard snuck in unnoticed for Tamworth and should have done better with his close-range hit on the half-hour mark, before Saah again went close with a strike from the edge of the area.

The opening goal came 6 minutes after the restart, with Crow slamming home a loose ball from just inside the box for his twelfth goal of the season.

A stunning save from Danny Alcock then prevented Scott Neilson from making it two as he took aim from six yards, before Crow did double the home side's advantage, crashing home another loose ball in the area.
