Clarets 50-Mile Challenge
04 February 2010 10:23:00

On Friday, 21st May, along with 14 companions, hardened Chelmsford City`s fundraiser Jon Read is attempting a 24-hour challenge in the Peak District, trekking up to 50 miles and raising money to enable the group to donate at least £500 to Essex Air A

The group plan to set off from Sheffield, walk south around Bakewell, then return back up again. They will be heading through rough terrain and have up to 24 hours in which to walk as far as they all can, up to a maximum of 50 miles. The challenge is tough, with statistics indicating only a 30% completion rate and, what’s more, the 15 are paying for the cost themselves, so the support of as many sponsors as possible is required to make their fantastic efforts worthwhile and secure covered terracing behind one goal.

“Our aim is to raise a minimum of £275 each - making a total of approximately £3.5k,” Jon explained. “Anyone offering us a few quid to help get to our pledge amounts will be very warmly received. If you’d prefer to pledge an amount to the group in general, there is a second sponsorship form available for that. There is no guarantee my stiff, ageing and lanky frame will get past more than my previous best of 28 miles but, if you’re interested, you can sponsor any amount to finish only, or as a one-off gesture.”

Chelmsford City supporters have already donated nearly £8,000 towards this project through many events, but the clan will be hugely grateful to anybody helping them in their quest. The master plan is to raise £12,000 by the end of the season, and the trekkers hope to chip-in “by flogging our poor feet to death!” Ring or text Jon on (07825) 303068 or E-Mail jon.read@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk for details of how to make a pledge.
