Saturday`s Blue Square Premier Review...
28 November 2009 18:33:00

News on the reduced Blue Square Premier programme wasn`t about results but the abandonment of the game at the Deva Stadium between troubled Chester City and Eastbourne Borough

The game was abandoned after 75 minutes following an on-pitch protest from home supporters.

City had gone 3-2 up when fans invaded the pitch, forcing the referee to call the game off.

It is understood supporters staged the demonstration to voice concern about affairs at the troubled club.

Chester face expulsion from the league unless repayments are made on debts to Wrexham and Vauxhall Motors by Monday.

The abandonment caps a difficult week for the club which saw four players leave the Deva Stadium.

Ironically, the protest came as Jim Harvey's side were on course for their fourth consecutive league win, leading 3-2 at the time.

Stevenage Borough moved closer to league leaders Oxford United after overcoming Salisbury City 1-0 at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium.

Charlie Griffin's goal on the stroke of half time was enough to ensure the spoils for Boro, who are now only two points behind Oxford, who were on FA Cup duty.

AFC Wimbledon kept their play-off bid on track with a vital victory over promotion rivals Kidderminster Harriers at Aggborough.

Danny Kedwell scored the only goal in the 20th minute when he collected Ricky Wellard's pass and fired the ball home.

Kidderminster were below par but on-loan debutant Damian Spencer wasted two good chances, firing one shot over and heading another effort over the bar.

Brian Smikle also had an opportunity easily saved as Harriers missed their chance to move into the play-off spots.

Peter Holmes eased the pressure on under-fire Ebbsfleet United manager Liam Daish with a secon half winner against high-flying Mansfield Town at Stonebridge Road.

The home side, who had not scored in eight games, went ahead after less than 3 minutes through Magno Vieira, who volleyed home a Ricky Shakes` cross.

The Stags levelled on 16 minutes when Rob Duffy notched from the penalty spot after Gavin Heeroo handled.

But Vieira, who later had a penalty saved by Alan Marriott, teed up Holmes on 57 minutes and he scored from close range.

Struggling Grays Athletic secured a crucial victory over Tamworth at the New Recreation Ground to boost their relegation battle.

The only goal came on the half-hour mark when Norwegian striker Petar Rnkovic headed home Ryan James's cross.

Rnkovic's finish made the Lambs pay for missed chances, mainly Jake Sheridan's shot which rattled the bar.

Gary Mills' visitors offered little in the second half and Grays held on to secure their first win in nine league games.

Gateshead battled back from a half time deficit to beat Crawley Town and move away from the relegation zone.

Michael Malcolm lit up an uneventful first half, when he slammed the ball into the top corner from 18 yards to put the visitors ahead after 29 minutes. But the hosts levelled with 16 minutes remaining when Kris Gate crossed for Daryl Clare to finish from close range.

And Gate was the hero 3 minutes later when he drove the ball home from 12 yards to win the game for the Essex outfit.
