Opening Day Blue Square Premier Review.....
08 August 2009 19:01:00

It was not a good start for the new boys in the Blue Square Premier on the opening day of the 2009/10 season.

None of the newcomers were able to claim a win, although a crowd of 4,488 witnessed two of them, AFC Wimbledon - promoted as champions of Blue Square South - and Luton Town – relegated from League Two – in action at Kingsmeadow, and they shared the spoils.

Luton got off to a great start when Tom Craddock slotted home from the penalty spot in the 14th minute.

However, Terry Brown`s Dons salvaged a point when Jon Main kept his cool from twelve yards with 11 minutes remaining.

Shane Blackett had been shown a second yellow card for the foul that led to Main`s spot-kick.

Chester City, who came down with Luton, had their game at Grays Athletic called off by the FA and Football Conference, while promoted Tamworth secured a useful point from their visit to Broadhall Way against Stevenage Borough.

Lee Boylan opened the scoring for the hosts, yet again from the spot, after 13 minutes before Brad Pritchard equalised for the Lambs on 28 minutes.

Boro`s Joel Byrom saw red 4 minutes into stoppage time.

Gateshead, who came up from Blue Square North with Tamworth, were comprehensively beaten 3-0 at the International Stadium by fancied Histon, whose goals came from a Danny Wright brace on 45 and 84 minutes and one from the Stutes` recent signing, Bradley Hudson-Odoi 9 minutes from time.

A 35th minute Matthew Barnes-Homer effort sealed Kidderminster Harriers` Aggborough win over Blue Square South play-off winners Hayes & Yeading United.

The managerial upheavals at Cambridge United must have affected them, and they went down to a 2-0 Abbey Stadium defeat against ten-man Barrow, whose Sean Newton was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the 53rd minute.

But goals from Carlos Logan on 62 minutes and Jason Walker from the spot in stoppage time earned the Bluebirds a well-earned victory.

Oxford United produced a dramatic comeback to beat York City at the Kassam Stadium with two goals in the last 3 minutes.

York had led through Richard Brodie`s 33rd minute effort. But Matt Green equalised on 88 minutes and then new defender Michael Creighton hit the winner as stoppage time ticked on.

Mansfield Town are the first leaders of the table after hammering Crawley Town 4-0 at Stag Meadow.

A brace from Kyle Perry (pictured) and a goal apiece for Rob Duffy and Jake Speight earned the Stags the spoils.

Fancied Wrexham had Gareth Taylor on target twice as Dean Saunders` side eased to a comfortable 3-0 win over Eastbourne Borough at the Racecourse Ground.

Hedi Taboubi had opened the scoring 9 minutes before the break with a fine 25-yard free kick.

Rushden & Diamonds went down to a surprise 2-0 Nene Park defeat to troubled Salisbury City, who had the bonus of a 47th minute Jamie Stuart own goal that Chris Flood added to in injury-time.

Diamonds` neighbours Kettering Town had better fortunes, beating Forest Green Rovers 2-1 at the New Lawn, courtesy of a Jean-Paul Marna brace on 71 and 81 minutes after Steve Davies had given the home side a 68th minute lead.

Substitute James Lindie scored on his debut for Ebbsfleet United around the hour-mark as Liam Daish's side claimed a draw at Moss Lane against Altrincham, who had taken the lead in the 38th minute through Chris Senior.
