Fleetwood Town start the new Blue Square North campaign on Saturday and centre half Michael Taylor is ready for kick-off.
The central defender said Thursday evening’s training session finished a solid pre-season and left the squad in good form when Town visit Solihull Moors this weekend. “Training went well tonight. It was good to cap off pre-season and we are now ready to start playing for points on Saturday. The lads are in good spirits. The aim was to end pre-season with everyone fit and raring to go and we’ve achieved that goal.”
Taylor, 26, is pleased how Micky Mellon’s nine the new signings have settled into the side and says dressing room rivalry will make the team stronger. “The lads who have come into the squad are good players and they compliment who we had already. We are at that point where we can swap and change players and it’s not going to make much of a difference when someone has to step in.
“The competition for places is only going to help the lads and raise standards. Everyone will be kept on their toes with players fighting to keep their shirts. When someone has the shirt on his back then they will do their best to keep it. It keeps the bar high.”
Turning to his own pre-season, Taylor is confident he has put in the hard work to be ready for kick-off. “It’s been tough, but good. There have been plenty of games for everyone and I’ve had enough minutes on the pitch to sort out my fitness.”
The centre-half is looking forward to the link up with the Cod Army after two good Highbury turn-outs at the Bury and Bolton Wanderers friendlies. “The supporters are always there for us and haven’t let us down. It’s time we repaid them on the pitch and hopefully we’ll do that this season with our strong squad.”
