Guiseley AFC have announced the signing of attacking midfielder John Rooney on loan until the end of the season from league rivals Wrexham.

The 26-year-old brother of Manchester United and England striker Wayne has been a thorn in the Lions side in recent seasons both for Chester FC and Wrexham.

He netted twice in Wrexham’s recent 3-2 win over the Lions two weeks ago.

Liverpool-born Rooney started out in the Everton academy at the age of six. After being released by Everton in 2002 Rooney moved to Macclesfield Town in League Two where he signed professional forms in 2008.

He made forty-one appearances for the club, scoring 3 goals, but his contract with Macclesfield expired.

He had trials with Derby County and Huddersfield Town but decided on trying to forge a career in the USA.

He joined the Major League Soccer Draft in December 2010 and signed for New York Red Bulls making his debut in April, 2011.

Rooney moved on to join Orlando City in January 2012 and it was with that club that he won his first championship.

After leaving Orlando, Rooney signed a contract with Barnsley in October 2012 but he was released at the end of the season.

The midfielder signed for Bury in July 2013 and was loaned to Conference (National League) Premier side Chester before the signing was made permanent.

He made 112 appearances for Chester, scoring 26 goals.

Rooney then joined Wrexham in June 2016, making his debut on the opening day of the current season. He has made thirty-three appearances for the Welsh outfit, scoring 11 goals.

Rooney has received international clearance ahead of tonight’s visit of Sutton United.
