Hawks Bring in New Keeper
13 August 2010 12:21:00

Havant & Waterlooville manager Shaun Gale has signed former Manchester City goalkeeper Richard Martin as short-term cover for injured Nathan Ashmore and suspended Aaron Howe.

The Hawks faced an uncertain start to the season this weekend after Ashmore dislocated his thumb 4 minutes into last Saturday’s friendly against Sutton United, but Gale has been quick to resolve the problem of having both his keepers unavailable.

“We’ve signed Richard and he’ll go straight into the side for the game on Saturday,” said the Hawks` boss. “He’s more than capable of doing a job for us after previous spells at Manchester City and Yeovil.

“He’s only 22 but he’s got League experience and kept three clean sheets in three games while on trial at Yeovil in pre-season. He’s not got a club but he has got good quality. We’ll assess the situation again ahead of the game against Weston-super-Mare on Monday.”

Martin was originally with Brighton, where he started as a trainee in 2005 before moving to Manchester City in 2007. While there he spent a month on loan with Burton Albion, and last season appeared for Yeovil and Grays Athletic.
