New Striker for Spartans

Blue Square North club Blyth Spartans have announced the signing of former Newcastle United striker Guy Bates from Drogheda United.

Bates, 24, is a tall, powerful striker who has enjoyed a varied and well-travelled career, having played in Australia for Newcastle Jets, Belgium with KV Oostende and RAA Louvi�roise and the Republic of Ireland with Drogheda. He also has English Football League experience with Darlington since being released by Newcastle in 2005.

He is best remembered by Drogheda fans for scoring the winner in the match against Cork City which secured the County Lough club the League of Ireland Premier Division title in 2007.

Most recently Bates has been playing for Northern Alliance outfit Walker Central.
