FA CUP: Carlisle go through but Alfreton lose out

Nationwide Conference championship challengers Carlisle booked their place in the second round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over League Two opponents Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night, but Nationwide North leaders Alfreton lost out at Macclesfield Town.

The Cumbrians took Bristol to extra time at Brunton Park and October's Nationwide Conference Player of the Month came off the bench to score the winner, heading home Chris Lumsden's cross in the 109th minute.

Carlisle will now face the winner of Wednesday night's replay between Forest Green Rovers and Bournemouth.

Alfreton Town were unlucky in losing 2-0 at Macclesfield, with manager David Lloyd sent to the stands for his protestations over a disallowed Peter Duffield 'goal', ruled out for offside. The Silkmen scored twice in the second half, through Jon Parkin and Mike Sheron, who effectively saw the home side through with his header 12 minutes from the end, setting up a trip to Hull in the next round for Brian Horton's side.

Despite their exit, Alfreton chairman Wayne Bradley and manager David Lloyd were delighted with the efforts of the players and the 700+ supporters who travelled to Moss Rose to cheer on the Reds. Click here for more details
