CONFERENCE: Midweek Round-Up

Northwich Victoria gave their own survival hopes a boost while virtually condemning Leigh RMI to relegation with a 1-0 win at Hilton Park on Tuesday night.

The visiting Vics won the battle of the bottom two thanks to Mark Quayle's 69th-minute strike from the edge of the area and a crucial block from Jon McCarthy in stoppage time when Chris Lane's shot looked destined for the back of the net.

Northwich remain second bottom of the Nationwide Conference table but they are now 15 points clear of the seemingly doomed Railwaymen and only a point behind Forest Green Rovers, who are a further point adrift of Farnborough and potential safety.

In the night's only other match, Crawley Town moved back into a play-off spot with a comfortable 3-0 win over Tamworth, who were reduced to ten men after quarter of an hour.

Dave Bampton was dismissed for a professional foul on Charlie MacDonald, and the home side soon took advantage as Rob Watkin scored in the 20th minute.

Neil Jenkins doubled their lead in the 72nd minute, and Allan Tait wrapped up the victory shortly afterwards, lifting Crawley six places up to second in the table.

For the love of the game...
