SOUTH: WEEKEND ROUND-UP

Nationwide South leaders Grays Athletic got the better of second-placed Hornchurch, winning 2-1 on the Urchins' patch thanks to Vill Powell's 83rd minute goal.

There were three goals in the match between the Towns of Basingstoke and Bognor Regis, which, strangely, came in the first, 45th and 90th minutes. Home side Basingstoke scored in the first and last minutes of the first half and the visitors pulled one back just before the final whistle, by which time it was too late for them to complete a comeback.

Seven Nationwide South matches produced a staggering 42 goals - that's an average of six per match (for anyone who's arithmetic isn't up to scratch)! Sutton United and Lewes managed eight between them (click here for a full match report), with Lewes beating U's 5-3, while Dorchester racked up four goals in 22 minutes either side of half time to edge out Bishop's Stortford 4-3.

Meanwhile, Cambridge City were putting five past Maidenhead, who could only manage one goal in reply, and Eastbourne scored four times in the final 27 minutes to turn round a 2-0 deficit against Weymouth.

A topsy-turvy match at St Albans saw the lead change hands three times before the home side's 87th-minute equaliser against Margate, while Redbridge led three times at Newport County and managed to hold out for the last quarter of an hour to claim a 3-2 win (click here for a full match report).

The remaining match of the high-scoring bunch produced a comparatively modest four goals, as Thurrock saw off Weston-Super-Mare at home to win 3-1.

In contrast, the games between Havant & Waterlooville and Hayes, and Carshalton Athletic and Welling United produced just the one goal, scored by Welling's Shaun Hale, giving United a very welcome 1-0 win.

For the love of the game...
